URB’s Top Picks For CMJ 2011

A whirlwind week slimmed down to our favorite acts to keep an eye out for. 

URB is entering the belly of the beast that is New York City’s CMJ this week with massive excitement and pseudo-lofty expectations. With what seems like thousands of acts coming to NYC to strut their stuff, one has to wade through all the calamity to find the acts that are truly bringing about proper buzz. So it might take ages to find that awesome DJ, that crazy live performance artist, or that freakishly impressive indie band, but after some fine-tooth combing, but in due time it’ll all be revealed. In order to save some time, (and fumbling through the CMJ guidebook), here’s URB top picks to check out at CMJ 2011.

Watch & Download Thom Yorke 30 Min DJ Set (Video & MP3)

On Tuesday, Radiohead celebrated the release of their TKOL RMX 1234567 album with an event in London that featured DJ sets by TKOL remixers Jamie XX, Caribou, Lone and Illum Sphere. The evening started off with a brief set by Thom Yorke, who has been spending plenty of time behind the decks lately—including a surprise set at Low End Theory last spring. You can download Yorke’s set, which featured tracks from Headhunter, Madvillian, Aphex Twin and Ramadanman, and watch the singer play records on The Boiler Room website.

Next up for Yorke is a mix he did for the BBC’s 6Mix, which will air on Sunday, Oct. 17th. The show features Yorke playing and discussing some of his favorite current records, including Zomby, Low, Emika and James Blake. He also plays a few Radiohead remixes that didn’t make it onto the TKOL RMX 1234567 record. Check out the tiny teaser for the show.

HEAR Burial, Zomby, Kode9 and More Deliver Tracks For Adult Swim (MP3)

UK dubstep and techno adventurers Burial, Kode9, Zomby, Ikonika and more have delivered tracks for a new compilation presented by Scion and Adult Swim, two brands that know how to promote excellent music in order to sell their own wares. The digital comp, titled Unclassified, offers up 18 rare and unreleased tunes by the elite of the UK’s adventurous electronic music scene, including Actress, SBTRKT, XXXY and 11 others. Zomby x Panda Bear :: “Thinks Fall Apart” (MP3)

More good news and good tunes from the undead producer. 

 

The shrouded badman that is Zomby is releasing a new album through the storied 4AD label. Dedication will be released in mid-July, the follow-up to his iconic debut on WERKDISCS, Where Were U In ‘92? Along with that, the first single “Natalia’s Song” (which appeared on Burial & Kode9’s farewell mix on the last BBC Radio 1 show from Mary Anne Hobbs), will be released next week on limited 10″.  As if that wasn’t enough, Zomby gives away “Things Fall Apart”, a cut that features Animal Collective’s Panda Bear.
