Zola Jesus to Debut New Collaboration at Guggenheim NYC (Video)

Zola Jesus will be making a special appearance at the Guggenheim on May 10th to perform selections from her last two albums Stridulum and Conatus. The Brooklyn-based producer/composer/performer JG Thirlwell has arranged nine of Zola Jesus’ songs for string quartet, and the Mivos Quartet will be performing with Zola while Thirlwell acts as musical director. STREAM Orbital ft. Zola Jesus :: “New France” (MP3)

Eight years since their last album (and 22 years since their first), you can still spot an Orbital tune from the first four bars. Such is “New France,” the latest off the band’s upcoming ninth full-length, Wonky. Even guest vocalist Zola Jesus sounds sampled straight from the duo’s early records. Not to say the brothers Hartnoll haven’t evolved…OK, really they haven’t. But who wants Orbital to change when their patented ringing synths still make the hairs on your arm stand up.

CMJ 2011: The Hits & Misses

The week-long marathon digested in what was great and not-so great. 

Well, it came and went just like that. CMJ 2011 was an interesting marathon of music and events to say the least, sprouting sprinkles of interesting parties, media-sponsored bonanzas that were “too exclusive” for other outlets to cover, and showcases that covered acts in the worlds of hip-hop, indie and trash maybe all too much. While CMJ was business as usual for some media (and of course college radio stations), it provided a very sobering look into how things have changed for the marathon festival. Whether it be the economy or the current musical business climate, CMJ did feel more segmented than ever before. Regardless, there were some definite highlights and lowlights from the fest. The COMPLETE Pitchfork Fest 2011 Review

For six years, Pitchfork has been delighting an eclectic hipster crowd at Chicago’s Union Park.  Will this year be any different?  Will Odd Future be booed offstage?  Are rompers still in fashion?  These are the questions and here are the answers (in order of the questions) – yes, don’t know until Sunday, sorta if you’re a size 2.  If I know one thing for certain it’s that this festival thrives on chaos, the unexpected, the subtle, the juxtaposed and the uncomfortable.   …MORE
