It’s always nice when a perennial favorite comes with a new flavor after decades of satisfaction. Yo La Tengo have never let us down, but they seems to hit on a different vein with “Here To Fail.” And the remixes (an fairly unusual step for the group) have given them just the right kind of buzz. We were feeling the Pete Rock remix last month that chopped the original into a tight hip-hop beat. But this new RJD2 version makes more sense, with some fresh Philly strings and a real Ladies Man vibe. This is on a straight baby-making tip.

iTunes Live Session EP
Released by Matador
Arriving right in time after their best album in years, this four-track Yo La Tengo EP is all over the map sonically, switching from grinding guitars ('El Es Gay') to an 11-minute locked groove ('Pass the Hatchet, I Think I'm Goodkind') to a Nico-exhuming piano ballad ('Weakest Part') to a raucous riff on 'Twist and Shout' ('Luci Baines'). Definitely worth the $4.

It's just one of those songs. It arrests the world and at the same time opens you up to it. Pure beauty, sublime and all those other words one uses when one encounters something indescribable. ...
