Graf + Homeland Security =

I’ve been into graffiti ever since I discovered the book Subway Art. In the early eighties, kids were rushing out to buy the book, everybody was talking about graffiti, and soon enough people were painting graffiti in Birmingham, UK, the town where I was born and raised.

I came from a Muslim background. My parents migrated from Bangladesh to the UK in the 60’s. I knew nothing of Bangladesh, all I knew were the streets of England. However I was raised as a Muslim. My upbringing wasn’t particularly strict, but we were taught to be mindful of the faith and have respect for it. I got up to things most kids did and shared the same interest; painting graffiti, listening to Run DMC, wearing big sneakers…
Throughout the eighties and nineties I was always …

Day 1: Tight Shorts and Mad Beats

It was hot. Sweat couldn't find enough places to fall out of, but smiling gangs of music fans danced from tent to tent, as if their tight pants weren't chafing, and the hair wax streaming into their eyes wasn't blurring their vision any more than the scalding yellow rays seeping into their brand new festival tans wasn't going to hurt in the morning. But as one approaches the seemingly out-of-place food service device and sees that its square metal food pans are in fact filled with the varying swatches and components that when stitched together, make a sneaker, one instantly reckons the odd juxtaposition of sneaker design and a la carte food service, and it becomes clear that this is a very cool idea in Sneakerland: mix and match the items to create a pair of self-customized sneakers.

For each of the 20 different parts that make up a …

Electronic godfathers return to the machines and school the new kids

There's always that moment of trepidation before embarking on the latest output from a seminal act. With a band as influential as Switzerland's Yello, they've set the bar as high as possible with a back catalog that includes such pivotal moments as "Oh Yeah" (you know, the Ferris Bueller song), "Vicious Games" and "Bostitch." Any hesitation falls away the moment the opening track "Planet Dada" thumps out of the speakers with a skittish electro pulse and ...
