Was it really only 12 years ago that hip-hop was still looked upon by “the man” as a threat to our modern society, in need of constant surveillance ala J. Edgar Hoover? Apparently, given the 93-page FBI report just released as part of the Freedom of Information Act on Wu-Tang Clan madman Ol Dirty Bastard.
The report talks of far-flung crimes such as car-jackings and shootings among other nefarious acts. Or maybe ODB really was as gangsta as his legend would suggest.

It must be every suburban 20-something’s dream to get on stage with a memeber of the Wu-Tang Clan. So we’re happy for SoCal indie-punk Wavves who got to play back-up band for GZA performing “Liquid Swords” on Fuel TV’s Daily Habit. The band does a solid job in re-creating RZA’s haunted loops (adding a little fuzzbox in the middle) while the MC plays fast and loose with the rhythm.

Lots of rappers have swagger. Far fewer have personality. But two of the games longest lasting and most enigmatic MCs, Ghostface Killah and MF DOOM, have molded themselves into characters that will live long in hip-hop lore. SO we’re more than a little jazzed on the new collaboration between Tony Starks and DOOM (DOOMSTARKS), coming out August 30th on Nature Sounds. The first release features “Victory Laps,” along with instrumentals and remixes from Madvillianz on the A-side, and Serato tone on the B-side. Not sure how that equals $25? A few weeks ago, we got ourselves into a bit of a tizzy when rapper Stranger Days sampled Fugazi on the track “Not Playin.” And since no good meme goes unduplicated, you could have guessed that within no time there’d be this project by Minneapolis producers and MCs Cecil Otter & Swiss Andy, who spent a good year combining the DC post-hardcore legends instrumental bits with the Wu-Tang Clan’s acapellas to create Wugazi. The mixtape, 13 Chambers, just dropped today. The result is every ’90s cool kid’s wet dream. We like this so much, we’re doing everything we can not to call it a mash-up (ooops!)
