Nice Nice – Extra Wow (Review)

Nice Nice

Extra Wow

Released by Warp Records

Portland duo Nice Nice have been a making music for more than a decade. Their first full-length, Chrome, was released in 2003, as well as a handful of other EPs, but it’s Extra Wow that most accurately displays their very real and impressive capabilities as a band. While previous records focused more on a sparse, sometimes disparate sound that very much came from their Pacific Northwest roots, Extra Wow is a more nuanced album, more concerned with layering and ambiance and circularity than dissonance and lo-fi production.

SXSW Day Three Recap: BBQs & Beats

Day Three of SXSW was a burner in terms of what could and would happen in terms of pleasant surprises. Starting off with daytime drinking at Carrera’s SXSW haven, the meandering began at the FADER Fort to meet and chat with WARP/LuckyMe wunderkind Hudson Mohawke, we ran into a man in a kilt. The day just got weirder after that; with every obstacle trying to interfere with the continuation of Day Three’s set-in-stone journey. Traffic, cancellations and BBQ were the main reasons. Walking into Stubb’s, there was an expectation that wobbler-extraordinaire Rusko was going to spin a set in the outdoor space. After eating some mac n’ cheese, the twitterverse said otherwise. Rusko couldn’t come to Austin due to layovers in Colorado, and Beats Antique, the headliner, would …

SXSW Day One Pick: Flying Lotus (Video)

In two words: mind-blowing. After a formidable performance from Eskmo, who also showed off his sick silver high-tops and fancy footwork, gaining an inch of space closer to the stage before FlyingLo’s set was akin to signing a death warrant. With an all-new visual presentation and the upcoming release of Cosmogramma, there were many things that could have left the salivating crowd disappointed.  FlyingLo mentioned that he wasn’t sure how Austin was going to react to his tunes since they don’t easily fit the mold of what’s expected for SX performing artists. This was something far beyond normal; it was phenomenal. With his hands in the air like a conductor summoning the bleeps and blurps from his decks, FlyingLo exuded confidence—and absolute joy.

Flying Lotus x Gaslamp Killer – 10 Years Of Flying Lotus Mixtape (MP3)

Hard to believe that Flying Lotus has been at this for a decade, even if most folks didn’t get on his steez until the mid-to-late ’00s. As proof, the LA beatsmith has issued a mixtape odds and sods tracks from the past ten years, mixed by The Gaslamp Killer. Here’s what he had to say:

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone
as we’re approaching this new year, I felt it was time to let go of some things that have been gathering dust. Some old things, and some new things, I tried to pick out tracks that I know yall haven’t heard yet so there should be surprises around every turn.

can’t believe i’ve been making tracks for over 10 years now..That said, there’s so much to learn still.

I hope you all enjoy this mix. Thanks to the Gaslamp Killer for doing an incredible job on this.

Can’t wait for you all to hear my album ‘Cosmogramma’ coming out April 20th 2010 on Warp Records.

Enjoy
