EXCLUSIVE :: Dave Sitek x UNKLE “Follow Me Down” Remix (MP3)

With TV on the Radio indulging in a hiatus these days, the groups sonic architect Dave Sitek has some extra time on his hands. Fortunately, there’s James Lavell, whose UNKLE project has always been an umbrella for the severely talented to do their thing. Hence this remix of “Follow Me Down.” Sitek slows the tempo down a few notches and strips things pretty bare compared to the very tribal original. If anything, Sitek’s version sounds more like the ’90s downtempo we used to love from Lavell and friends, so kudos to that.

New Territory For UNKLE (Interview)

James Lavelle, the DJ, producer, Mo’ Wax record label boss and founder of musical outfit UNKLE, is back with the fourth official UNKLE album Where Did the Night Fall. With Pablo Clements (Psychonauts) as his new sideman, they go one a new route, using primarily live instrumentation and rock/psych pop as their sonic palette. I had a talk with him about this leap into new territory, on a sunny day in Hollywood.

URB: Why do you choose to use the UNKLE tag, since there’s always been a changing cast of group members.
JAMES LAVELLE: It’s not different from why would you keep on calling it Fleetwood Mac? Many bands come and go, but when it’s not started as a traditional band, then group members come and go. The main reason is because we created an identity, and to create an …

UNKLE “An Introduction” to New Album, part 1 (Video)

UNKLE feels like they are “just beginning.” Granted, the duo of James Lavelle and Pablo Clements are preparing to release album number four, but it feels different this time. In the first installment of a three part documentary chronicling the making the album Where Did the Night Fall (Surrender Sounds, May 11th), Clements talks about the essence behind previous records and why this new one is special. A plethora of guests—Mark Lanegan, Sleepy Sun, The Black Angels and Katrina Ford—join an ensemble cast of returning friends—Joel Cadbury, ELLE J from Dark Horses and Autolux—to make this record, apparently, entirely new. Sounds refreshing. Have a peek:

Where Did The Night Fall

Released by Surrender All

Being that it is one of the pioneering groups in trip-hop, UNKLE has the right to bend – and break – the rules. It trail-blazed one scene and now appears to be working on yet another. Let’s call it psych-hop. The British DJs are back to work with their latest full-length, Where Did The Night Fall, an album that is sure to win over new fans just as it will likely alienate others. Do note: for fans who wish to hear another Psyence Fiction, don’t get your hopes up; ...

U.N.K.L.E.- “Natural Selection” (MP3)

When two sets of Londoners by the names of James Lavelle and Pablo Clements email you asking to collaborate with them, you just do it. Not only would your work be associated with the likes of Josh Homme, Thom Yorke and Autolux, but you’d probably experience one of the holy grails of wish-I-could-collaborate-with-them chances.

U.N.K.L.E.’s latest and eighth, full album release, Where Did The Night Fall, is scheduled for an early May (10th for UK/Europe, the 11th for America) date and will contain collaborations with Austin, Texas Psychedelic rock quintet, The Black Angels, TV on the Radio’s vocalist, Katrina Ford and as well as Screaming Trees/former Queen of the Stone Age/The Gutter Twins member, Mark Lanegan.
Catch them while they’re still hot…15 years later.
