URB: What does U-N-I stand for and how did you come up with the name?
YO!: The name “U-N-I” came from [The Roots'] Illadelph Halflife album. We use it as a first person statement, “You” as in Thurz & “I” as in myself.
Thurz: The song is “UNIverse at War” featuring Common. We also see our name as an ideology of being boundless and not boxed into one sound.

Block Party’ with The Roots

In order to kick off the new school year, UCR held their 10th annual “Block Party,” this past Friday. No doubt there was lots of food, drinks and socializing, but that was not the main reason to attend the block party…one word: MUSIC. It included live sets from one of LA’s most notable hip-hop duo and “MTV’s LA Breakout Artists,” U-N-I, Oakland native, Lyrics Born and one of the biggest name in hip-hop, The Roots.

With a live band to back them, U-N-I hyped up the crowd with their energetic and up beat performance. They opened with the first single to drop off their 2007 album Fried Chicken and Watermelon, “K.R.E.A.M. (Kicks Rule Everything Around Me),” followed by their very successful single “Beautiful Day “(which is on heavy rotation on …

Creme De La Imeem!

The Creme de la Creme Mixtape was released just yesterday, Sep 23rd. It features tracks by 15 artists that have appeared at dubFrequency events for the past year and a half. In order of performance, it features– The Cool Kids, Hollywood Holt, Mickey Factz, Pacific Division, Dom Kennedy, Chris Young, Donnis, Carter, BMB, Blu, Mic Terror, Vyle, Diz Gibran, U-N-I and Kidz in the Hall. There are also a few exclusive tracks with guest appearances by Lil Wayne, The Game, Raekwon, Lupe Fiasco, Justice and Miss Info.

Acrylick Grand Opening!

This past Saturday, Acrylick Clothing Company opened its flagship store in Azusa CA. If you don’t know, Acrylick’s got flavor so the grand opening was nothing short of FLAVOR!

Acrylick opened their store with a bang by keeping the shoppers/party-goers fed (carne asada and chicken tacos) and hydrated (4 kegs).

To top it all off, the opening featured live performances by Mr. Choc, U-N-I, Son of Ran, GIO, The Uhh…! and Rob Grimes.
