In the pantheon of turntable technicians, few have influenced the global community as much as Cut Chemist. From his days in Jurrasic 5 to his legendary 7-inch sessions with DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist has been at the forefront of what one can do with two turntables and a mix. For his latest project, the afro-influenced Sound of the Police, Cut Chemist actually loses one of the turntables and replaces it with a loop pedal, creating a DJ set like you’ve never heard before.

Stream Cut Chemist’s New Mix Album ‘Sound of the Police’ (MP3)

LA DJ Cut Chemist and local public radio powerhouse KCRW have a long running bro-mance that’s followed his career as a member of Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli to his more recent teamings with DJ Shadow and his solo sessions. So it’s little surprise that the renowned turntablist would debut his latest effort—the afro-brazilian influences Sound of the Police—on the ever popular album preview page of the stations website, KRCW.com.

The 41-minute session, created using just on turntable and a loop pedal, was recorded live from a practice session a few years back. You can also download the single off the release, “Adidas to Addis” here.

RIP ROC RAIDA :: WORLD’S BEST TURNTABLIST

Master turntablist DJ Roc Raida (B. Anthony Williams) passed away today. Part of the original DJ collective and turntablist group the X-ecutioners, (formerly known as X-Men), Raida’s vinyl exploits quickly earned him a reputation as one of the best DJs in the world. He captured the DMC World DJ Championship in 1995 with his superb beat-juggling, seamless mixing, and flawless, ambidextrous execution. He was so talented, he could literally spin with his arms behind his back. Not only a master of the turntables, Raida was also an accomplished martial artist.

Scratch the Ultimate DJ Game Demo Video and Review

URB went and checked out the upcoming Scratch the Ultimate DJ game and discovered a game that’s about as “real” as you’re gonna get. The game prides itself on realism and walking the line between playing a game and actually making music. And we can confirm that Scratch is very real.

The game has two modes—Solo and Studio. Solo is based around gameplay, where you match the beats, samples and scratches to the song being played using a combination of MPC-style control pads (produced in conjunction with actual MPC manufactuer Akai), a crossfader (which works as a toggle rather than a sliding fader) and of course the turntable (Numark’s standard CD-J wheel). It’s standard rhythm gaming fair and many players might leave it at that. But game designers Genius are mostly enthused about the additional features.
