Scott “Prefuse 73” Herren has a long career of shifting sonic shapes under various guises. But Prefuse has always been a reliably beat-choppy affair, that is, perhaps, until now. This sampler reveals the newest Prefuse album, The Only She Chapters, to sound rather dark, lush and brooding—not words you’d be more likely to apply to one of Herren’s other personas, perhaps Savath Y Savalas. The album also features a variety of female vocalist (another trait more common with SyS), including dearly departed Broadcast singer Trish Keenan, Zola Jesus and Adron. Granted, with an entire album condensed into 2 1/2 minutes, it’s impossible to be sure, but if this is what Warp Records is putting forward as a taster, we shouldn’t expect too much MPC mayhem this time around.
