UNKLE – Where Did The Night Fall (Review)

UNKLE

Where Did The Night Fall

Released by Surrender All

Being that it is one of the pioneering groups in trip-hop, UNKLE has the right to bend – and break – the rules. It trail-blazed one scene and now appears to be working on yet another. Let’s call it psych-hop. The British DJs are back to work with their latest full-length, Where Did The Night Fall, an album that is sure to win over new fans just as it will likely alienate others. Do note: for fans who wish to hear another Psyence Fiction, don’t get your hopes up; ...

Massive Attack – Heligoland (Review)

Massive Attack

Heligoland

Released by EMI

The legendary music scene of Bristol has changed as rapidly as the seasons come and go, with new rhythms being formulated and concocted by bright minds that just seem to thrive off their climate. From past giants Roni Size to current producers like Appleblim, Joker and Gemmy, the scene has never shied away from providing the biggest talent. This can be stemmed back to the late '80s, when The Wild Bunch was formed, and onward to the '90s when the group splintered off to become the now-legendary and contextual trip-hop heroes that are Massive Attack. The group has been in a state of supposed creative limbo; since 2003's 100th Window they had not released a full-length studio album, and while 2006's Collected compilation had a few new and unreleased tracks, there was much more to be desired. After almost four years of constant rumors, guest artist lineups, and wondering what their return would sound like, Robert "3D" Del Naja and Grant "Daddy G" Marshall have returned with Heligoland, a record that will change the perception of the group's definitive "trip-hop" sound into something more abstract, stripped-down and soulful.

King Midas Sound: Noir Dub Escapism

Conversations of Lover's Rock and melting to dubby rhythms with Kevin Martin

Walking down empty streets usually signifies the end of a night for someone, the wind hitting his face, footsteps creepily getting louder and storefronts dimmed. Drunks, gluttons and heathens are all around, as things keep winding down as time passes. The only soundtrack to fuel the night’s depth of darkness is the sounds of King Midas Sound, the dub-child of Kevin Martin (aka The Bug), Roger Robinson and Hitomi. The trio’s tracks inhabit cinematic landscapes, which are unearthed by rhymes, alternately power and soft. Their Hyperdub full-length, Waiting For You, was just released with notable reception, and it comes as no surprise, considering the gears that made the wheels turn. We took time out with one of those gears, Kevin Martin, to speak about the process of songwriting, views on “reviving trip-hop” and much more.

Sade – “Soldier Of Love” (MP3)

Kanye’s already blogged this, so maybe it’s passé, but dang if this new Sade joint isn’t the best R&B slowjam we’ve heard in aaaaaages. The UK queen has always been able to crack charts while creating some of the most unique music around. This new song shows she hasn’t missed a step in the nine years since her last album. Can’t wait for the full-length dropping Feb 8. It’s gonna be sexy time all over the world that night. Sade.com

Portishead- “Chase the Tear” (for Amnesty International) (Video)

Portishead has released a new track, “Chase the Tear” (as in tearing paper, not crying). The song was created for Amnesty International to be released on International Human Rights Day. The song is upbeat by Portishead standards, although Beth Gibbons could never sound happy, and the playful video watches the band perform the song in extreme close-up. Check out the classic EMS VCS3 synthsizer played by Adrien Utley.

The track is available for download at 7Digital, with proceeds going to Amnesty International. So no zShare bitches.
