Rock the Bells Report (video/audio)

My caffeine for the morning of Saturday Aug 11, was the words “Sold Out.” They flashed on a sign right before I exited at Glen Helen Parkway. I was in awe, driving up the picturesque event center wedged between the mountains at the northeastern tip of the Inland Empire. I knew this was going to be the best Rock The Bells yet.

Arriving at the venue at 9 AM, colleague and fellow guerilla intern Corey “CoCo” Ciotti and I set up the URB booth and began slangin’ subscriptions for $10 a pop, plus bag of free ish. Yes, indeed URB got it for cheap. Behind our booth was a giant live graffiti display and we faced the Paid Dues area that surprisingly drew thousands of dedicated underground heads away from the major label stage all …

Hip Hop In Full Effect!

Before Common’s new album dropped last Tuesday, URB had the pleasure of attending a hearing party at 33 Third, a local L.A. record shop. As Common’s album kept the shop buzzin throughout the day, DJ Lord Ron kept the barbeque rockin out back, where a live graffiti show was taking place. The graff show was in honor of Common’s latest release, and included some of LA’s best artists, such as: Ezraone, Bahgo 74, Rezin, and a few more local artists. The event was a great showing for the hip-hop community, and exemplified the non-musical components that define hip-hop, i.e. it’s public support and promotion of equality and diversity, individuality and togetherness, and the ultimate empowerment of the disenfranchised.

Though my initial intention was to come away with an opinion on Common’s …

Lollapalooza- Karen O outdresses Bjork…almost

The solar furnace of day one gave to a gray blanket over Chicago for day two, a major relief for sun stroked concert goers. Those brave survivors of Friday night who managed to get back early enough were faced with a choice between massive Swedish electronic/tuba collective I’m from Barcelona, and Canadian media darling’s Tokyo Police Club, who opened the southern main stage with a finely honed set of precision indie rock. Immediately following were Minneapolis band Tapes N Tapes, whose inspiration ranges from early period Pavement to mid period Pavement, but they proved a very solid tribute act nonetheless.

Kanye, Jay-Z & Beyonce watch…Wale???

Last night was Mark Ronson's first big Stateside show and everyone was out and about in NYC to support. DC wildman and URB contributer (Jul/Aug), Wale apparently stole the show, according to some reports. One thing that we can report for sure is that his newly dropped 100 Miles And Running mixtape slaughters the slaughter that slaughtered the slaughter. Opening up with one of our favorite Dilla beats evar (flipped by Ronson) doesn't hurt either. Mixed by Nick Catchdubs (who also wrote the shit out of the Lil Wayne story in this month's Fader), 100 Miles is a tour-de-force…when steroids were still cool and yellow jerseys meant something. Bonnaroo Flaming Lips, Pt. 1 (Video)

The band is finally really about to go on, I’ve just dashed over from the backstage bar into the photo pit and the pre-show mixtape that they’ve been playing segues into a song from the first Roxy Music album and I’m instantly transported to 1986’s mescalyn college daze and listening to that album constantly, and this reminds me that I have mushrooms with me, not a lot, cuz I shared some with a neighbor who helped me smoke off a hangover the night before with a mix of weed and opium that I’d never tried.

I casually reach into my pocket and pull out the dried bitter stems and crinkly caps and start chewing, chasing ‘em with some stout beer which sustains my jack-built buzz, and just feels right after the ‘shrooms. I gush down a ton of water and face …
