Jaga Jazzist – One Armed Bandit (Review)

Jaga Jazzist

One - Armed Bandit

Released by Smalltown Supersound/Ninja Tune

Jaga Jazzist, the behemoth nine-piece jazz and prog rock band from Norway has unleashed another album, One-Armed Bandit, on the world.  Jaga can be hard to argue with, they have been steadily contributing to many more musical scenes than those listed above for the last 15 years. As a matter of fact, of any band I know, they might be the hardest to quantify in terms of style. Having said that there is always one common thread, which is some form of jazz a influence. Admittedly I was a little disappointed at first.  2002's A Living Room Hush had me with a few choice tracks that bled my two favorite lines, jazz and drum & bass, and I had hoped there would be more to come. There really was no bleeding of lines. Hopes dashed from the outset as I started to try and take it in through a different pair of ears. It was only when I picked up a message from Flying Lotus on Twitter where he sang their praises by "wishing music like this was around when I was younger."  If FlyLo is down then I must have missed something. That cat's ear is so in tune he is one of the few folks I would allow to soundtrack my life.

Slug’s First Cover/Phone Masturbation

Sean Daley, aka Atmosphere’s MC, aka Slug, has made a career of exposing himself. Not in a trenchcoat in front of the grammar school kinda way, but on the mic. Fittingly enough for URB’s issue full of firsts, Slug might’ve been the first rapper to make an album about a girl. And even more vulnerably, the heartbreak she caused. Those were the Lucy Ford EPs, and while Lucy may or may not be the source of the sore in the story that follows, one thing is for sure, it could only be Sean.

My First URB Cover/Phone Masturbation for a Stranger by Slug
I was in NY for press, and on the tail end of a tour. I had just recently received news that my woman friend was leaving me and moving out of …

A Lazarus Taxon

Released by Thrill Jockey

The instrumental prowess of Chicago's celebrated avant-rockers may appear to reveal itself in their unshakable organic grooves. But in reality, the group is as tight as a pair of bound magnets -- a meticulous musical machine, not just some genre-hopping hipster jam band. That makes it all the more surprising that some of the most interesting parts of this three-CD-plus-DVD box set of rarities are the ones where Tortoise cedes control and gets manipulated by the whims of an audio or video remix. A Lazarus Taxon is a set ...
