Theophilus London, “You Got the Love” Music Video (Video)

I think it’s safe to say that the love fest is continuing. “You Got the Love” now infamous for ending Sex and the City and being remixed by Frankie Knuckles has had many a hand rework the magic, now Theophilus London took The XX remix of Florence and the Machine’s cover for “You Got the Love” and triple remixed it. The video is set to the ’96 Olympics. Love The XX remix avec Theophilus it feels a lot more whole; I still like The XX and Florence but there was something missing, I guess that was Theo. Watch the video below and listen to the Frankie Knuckles treatment as well. Long live the gospel! Videos after the jump…

David Sitek Interview

Favored for his production and guitar playing in TV on the Radio as well as his deliciously warped mind, David Sitek is once again churning out more musical snacks. Only this time he’s included a melting pot of solid singers to his funk glitter party. Ushering in pals like TVOTR’s Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone, Karen O from Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Theophilus London, Yukimi Nagano of Little Dragon, and David Byrne, Sitek will drop his mulit-artist collaboration Maximum Balloon Sept. 21 via DGC/Interscope. Here he talks landscaping, shifting from the east coast to the west, and Dr. Laura. …MORE

Theophilus London Live @ Webster Hall, NYC (Video)

Pardon the grainy view at the beginning of the video, apparently the fog machines periodically blasting off from the balcony of Webster Hall did their job.  But having said that, so did Theophilus London.  I thought the few tracks I’d heard from his second release, This Charming Mixtape and his latest, I Want You were pretty cool but I didn’t get it.  20 minutes into his set, it was slapping me in the face in the form of a steady procession of bass heavy dance tracks smoothed out by synths that demanded, at the very least, a two step, and, at the most, me to turn my camera off and jam with the girl in front of me.  Besides the structure of the set, …

Maximum Balloon (Review)

Maximum Balloon

Maximum Balloon

Released by DGC / Interscope

The self-titled debut release from Maximum Balloon, the artist better known as TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek, plays out much like a TVOTR record albeit with a slightly different cast of characters. Bandmates Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone are along for part of the ride and joined by the likes of Theophilus London, Holly Miranda, and Little Dragon. The synthy dancefloor funk of “Groove Me” gets things ignited and segues well into the horn-inflected, multi-tiered ambience of “Young Love.” “Absence of Light” (featuring Adebimpe) and “Shake Down” (featuring Malone) are classic, uptempo TVOTR tracks that tie the record together well. The back-and-forth dynamic of male to female vocalists is also paramount to the album’s continuity. Karen O’s silky vocals carry the airy “Communion” and the beautiful crooning of Holly Miranda sits gently atop the downtempo drums of “The Lesson.” The explosive lead single “Tiger,” which features a serpentine feline chasing people through an endless sea of balloons in the excellent music video, is Sitek letting loose all the tools in his vast arsenal. The track leaps out of the frame thanks to the vocal stylings of Aku, whose delivery bears an uncanny resemblance to Adebimpe.
