Oral History of the Detroit Electronic Music Festival

Those crazy kids over at Resident Advisor went and did the seemingly impossible, interviewing over 50 people to get the complete(ish) story of Detroit’s annual techno festival. They even talked to URB’s own Detroit native Joshua Glazer. From Carl Craig and Richie Hawtin to Paxahau and the Mayor of Detroit, it’s a serious read.

To explain the many twists and turns of the festival thus far, we turned to the people that were directly involved. Artists, promoters, city officials, journalists, more than 50 in all, presenting an oral history of Detroit’s electronic music festival. READ

Juan Maclean and the Politics of Dancing

Juan Maclean is kicking ass and taking names. On his new DJ Kicks mix for !K7, Maclean preaches a purist house gospel; in conversation he is just as direct, taking tiresome music and fans to task. And he’s got plenty of room to talk. You can’t really imagine New York nightlife in the early 21st century without Maclean or his cohorts at DFA Records. As part of Six Finger Satellite with future DFA co-founder James Murphy in the 1990s, Maclean was ahead of the curve making indie rock that winked at synthesizers. Debuting in the fall of 2001, DFA’s punk/funk vibe added much needed grit to the hyper sanitized party scene during Giuiliani Time. Channeling the DIY ethos of late ’70s dance rock and early ’90s house music, the label’s roster including LCD Soundsystem, the Rapture and the Juan MacLean (and eventually Hot Chip and Holy Ghost) gave nightcrawlers a reason to buck Drachonian Cabaret Laws and bottle service trends. It’s easy to forget that Juan Maclean has never and still does not live in New York. We caught up with the part-time professor on a pleasant early spring night at the Hotel Indigo in New York’s fading flower district to discuss the lost art of turntable mixing, global perspectives on dance music culture, the appeal of live musicians and the straight/gay disco divide. …MORE

Motor City Drum Ensemble – Raw Cuts Vol. 1 (Review)

Motor City Drum Ensemble

Raw Cuts Vol. 1

Released by Faces Records

Motor City Drum Ensemble consists of just one man, Danilo Plessow, from Germany’s very own motor city, Stuttgart. He has worked under many guises, but caused quite a stir with his collection of releases on his own MCDE imprint. Now the tracks are compiled along with some exclusive unreleased material. As his moniker implies, Plessow is a fan of classic Detroit techno, but this mix shows the man also has an affinity for old-school Chicago house, not to mention vintage soul and boogie. Through his Raw Cuts series Plessow has developed a hypnotic deep house sound that simultaneously reveres the past while remaining clearly focused on the future. His soulful tunes cross genres effortlessly to bring back some soul to house and techno music. The tracks are raw ad touch on the essence of Detroit with dirty drums, ruff basslines and that hand-cut feel made famous by Theo Parrish. Combining clever sampling with a penchant for analogue equipment, MCDE has cultivated a style that is somehow incredibly loose and tight at the same time.

Kyle Hall: DIY, Dreams & Detroit

You don't need to be old and finesse to make proper tunes.

Kyle Hall is a typical 18 year old; he’s out and about, chillin’ with the ladies, having fun with his boys and you know, spinnin’ records all around the world. Oh, that last part of the sentence is referring to his production and DJing prowess, as Hall has been steadily climbing up electronic music for quite some time. Since 2007, he’s been making headway with his killer sets and tunes, staying close to the classic but never afraid to show off something fresh. While Hall maybe from the birthplace of techno and assembly lines, he’s not letting the past overcome his future. With his Wild Oats imprint putting out his fantastic 12″s, touring non-stop with the help of his trusty agent Shauna, Hall is staying young, productive and determined at all once. He was kind enough to take time out …
