Last week’s edition of Friday Fresh was postponed because of our Grammy coverage, which should be making its way to your eyes and ears shortly. It’s a good thing too because that gives us a chance to drop some Valentine’s Day heat on ya’ll.

This early edition of Friday Fresh comes to us courtesy of DJ Wonway Posibul. Wonway is one of the ‘Renaissance’ Men of the burgeoning music scene in the SF Bay Area. From being a radio host, producer/musician, and all around cool kid, Wonway really made waves on our radar out here with the release of Tree City Heights last year. The track, which was featured in an earlier URB article, also served as the soundtrack for the play that stood eponymous with its title. Moreover, the track is a clear example of the keen ear that he has towards music and the ‘soul’ of the scene around him.

Quite literally getting the link for this mix as I stepped back into editing mode after a long night of production across SF, this was a (very) welcome aural change that was immediately downloaded and placed in my ’bout to make a baby’ folder. In his own words, “Many songs here talk about ‘love’ but just as many cover heartbreak, lust, and just flat our seduction; all emotions and actions that can take place on one of those memorable evenings where the planets align and desire and impulse perfectly intertwine.” Bold words from the man nicknamed “Latin Soul Brother” by the majority of the real SF Soul heads. Track listing notwithstanding, the first thing to take note of is that this IS NOT one of those mixes where the DJ blows his/her load by trying to fit as much material into said space; in fact, the blends and selection are drawn out with a very deliberate pace and story to tell.

Take Wonway’s advice and “Wait ’til it gets dark tonight, press play, sit (or lay) back, and let the music be your guide.”

The votes have been tallied and once again URB readers have made their voices heard. And how did 2012 flesh out in terms of your favorite artists? A rock solid mix of all-time favorites, current buzz-makers and a few veteran acts climbing their way to the top once again. Don’t call it a comeback — although it seems hip-hop dominated your world in 2012, while the rest of America was jocking EDM as the next big thing. Are MCs the new DJs, who are the new pop stars, already?

12. DOOMTREE

This seven-person collective from the Twin Cities has been on our radar for almost a decade, although it seemed like they’d forever be in the shadow of MPLS patriarchy Rhymesayers. Not that there’s anything but healthy competition between the two camps. And now, riding on win after win as a team, plus all-star performances from individual players Lazerbeak and Dessa, Doomtree has cracked our year end list for the first time. Looks like Minnesota is still the hip-hop capital of the Midwest.

Coachella 2012 is almost here, with an unprecedented two duplicate weekends of the world’s best music performed in one of the world’s most beautiful venues. Picking the acts you must see is a full-time sport for Coachella attendees and the media alike. But considering that URB has been down with the desert spectacular since 1999, we figure we’ll throw our two cents into the ring.

Though never achieving the notoriety of other French “electro” DJs, Breakbot has been a secret have, churning out house and techno tracks that just calmly state “quality.
