Indie group Hey Champ (previously signed under Lupe Fiasco’s label FNF) just leaked a brand new track from their upcoming remix project w/ dubFrequency. Taking the vocals from one of my personal favorites from Gone Fishing — “Champions” — Hey Champ mashes together a concoction of 80s pop and funk as background to match. Definitely an interesting sound to hear The Cool Kids on since we’re all so used to their signature yet minimal drum beats. Take a listen here and look out for the rest of the project soon (rumored appearances include Mike Posner, The Sounds, and others)…
After finishing up a lengthy tour with No Doubt, The Sounds will be embarking on their own tour in the U.S.
Chromeo, Canada’s top purveyors of new school funk and 80s soul revivalists, have been tabbed to compile the next edition of the esteemed DJ Kicks mix series. They’re even stepping up and giving away a free download of their cover of The Eagles’ “I Can’t Tell You Why” which you can nab by providing an e-mail address at chromeo-dj-kicks.com.
With their mix of early 80s disco and R&B they join other artists like Kruder & Dorfmeister, Tiga, Hot Chip and Booka Shade who have had their own fun under the DJ Kicks banner. Expect to hear the sounds of Leo Sayer, The Alan Parsons Project and others in Chromeo’s mix.

After all, electro is the cool thing to listen to right now, and it has already overlapped into the world of rap (i.e. Armand Van Helden and Dizzee Rascall, N.O.R.E. and MSTRKRFT, etc.). Both Boyz and Beetroots have released tracks to put this theory to the test for themselves: Boyz Noize’s official remix of “Boom Boom Pow” (Will I Am frequents at Dim Mak’s LA hot spot Cinespace and is a fan of Noize’s work) and BB’s “Awesome”, a song featuring the Cool Kids which samples the Beetroots’ own …
It seemed like a mega-club line-up more worthy of London than Los Angeles. But recent LA transplant Damian Lazarus brough half a dozen headliners together to celebrate the release of his first album, Smoke the Monster Out. The evening started and ended with local techno heros The Droog crew, who took their regular residency on the mainstage.
Next came Lazarus’ live set, which found the one time music journalist decked out in a pork pie hat and poncho, tweeking a table of effect pedals and transforming his rather moody album into more club friendly fair (custom composed for this night only). Lazarus was joined onstage by Swedish twins vocalist Taxi Taxi who appear throughout the album while friends in animal masks stalked the stage. The live set was inspired, but Lazarus wasn’t finished yet…
