Georgia Anne Muldrow: Everything Coming Up Roses

Los Angeles’ prolific, free-spirited musician combines African history with organic themes to make her own brand of soulful hip-hop music.

Producer and singer Georgia Anne Muldrow is on a mission to liberate the world from Eurocentrism. Her purpose is evident in the bold, imaginative songs she creates with people like Mos Def, SA-RA and Erykah Badu and the intensity displayed in her latest self-produced solo album, King’s Ballad. Released February 9 by Ubiquity Records, the album’s hip-hop, progressive soul, funk, jazz and African rhythms invokes both ancient and futuristic themes.

“I’m actively engaging in the battle for opening minds,” she says on the phone from her home in Los Angeles.

Live Review: Mos Def (& Doom) @ Congress Theater, Chicago

Let me start by saying I have very little respect for Doom. His fans are able to understand and be content with the fact that Doom will routinely send out impersonators to perform for him, as he did last night at the near-packed Congress Theater in Chicago, and I respect them for that. But that stuff doesn’t fly for me. I left about 15 minutes through Doom’s set, which was filled with loud bass, horrible lip-synching, and–the only thing I really liked about it–Doom’s hypeman Big Benn Kling-On, the only person who could’ve convinced me to stay.

However, Saturday night was not a complete and total loss by any stretch of the imagination–Mos Def was in the building, and he came with a swagger and presence that made Doom’s lacky impersonator look like he was performing at a high school talent show. …MORE

Mos Def – “The Tournament” (MP3)

Don’t you just love stumbling upon stuff like this? I’m a really big Mos Def fan – a really big one – so when I found this posted on my facebook wall by an acquaintance of mine, fellow Dante fanatics can probably imagine the amount of gratification that instantaneously shot through my being at that very moment in time. With Mos Def doing what he does best on the track, it just wouldn’t be right if I didn’t share this Ecstatic leftover.

Mos Def – “History” feat. Talib Kewli (Video)

Now this is how you make a tightly budgeted video. “Supermagic” was a return to form for Mighty Mos but the video left much to be desired. History’s video treatment tells a subtle story of Mos’s rise to fame from his BK neighborhood. Kweli tags along for the ride and his appearance will likely make heads yearn for a new Black Star album. All in all it’s got some nice direction and the images fit the song’s climate pretty well. Did I mention the song is great too? The video’s a good way to spend 2 minutes and change so give it a click.
