The last of the SXSW articles : 26 bands + South by Superlatives (MP3)

No pictures, no nothing. Just words and music links. This article wants you to know what we think and the words are written below for you to find out more. Everyone is created equal but if you see the pics you might not click the link and get music from the artist. Take your time here and share this with friends. Hours were spent partying in the Texas sun, passing business cards, getting free tacos at parties (the good ones) and watching bands and films promote their butts off while they played multiple shows per day. Some shows were packed and some shows were empty but someone has to watch. Not everyone was official but everyone was official.

Big Pooh, Tanya Morgan, & Money Making Jam Boys Live at Blockley Pourhouse (Video)

Before going to see Philly Slick perform there the previous Friday, I’d never been to the place before. But I have to say that it’s one of Philly’s doper new spots — even though it’s location in University City seems to unfairly stereotype it as your typical college sports bar. I can definitely see it becoming a magnet for underground talent after it’s gotten a little more room to breathe and build it’s reputation. The So Motivational Tour couldn’t have picked a better spot to launch.

Von Pea – Pea’s Gotta Have It (Review)

Von Pea

Pea's Gotta Have It

Released by Interdependent Media

Of the thousands of rappers out there claiming to be hardcore in 2009, few were harder than the hardest of Brooklynati’s hardcore gentlemen, Von Pea. Funny thing is, Mr. Pea isn’t actually all that hardcore. He’s got an alternative mentality, mixed with an updated swagger (oh, how I despise that word). However, it’s his lyrical dexterity that makes his microphone skills hardcore.

Curtain Call for Little Brother (Interview)

The time has come. One of the most acclaimed hip-hop groups of the last decade, the North Carolina duo of Phonte and Big Pooh, better known as Little Brother, are set to release their fourth and final album. They’ve represented the essence of hip-hop with vivid lyrics and fantastic production, but they’ve also seen more than a fair share of ups and downs. Expectations are high for LeftBack and fans don’t want this to come to an end, but after this LB take off to focus on other endeavors.

Tanya Morgan Presents: Donwill – Don Cusack In High Fidelity (Review)

Donwill

Don Cusack In High Fidelity

Released by Interdependent Media

It's rare to find a pure concept album at any given point in the history of recorded music. As far as hip-hop goes, the only other stand-out example that comes to mind is Prince Paul’s A Prince Among Thieves -- an epic, cameo-filled hip-hopera. For Donwill's ambitiously conceptual solo project, the Tanya Morgan MC chose to mirror the storyline of Stephen Frears’ High Fidelity, a film that Don has claimed holds many parallels to his own personal life. In order to provide the album with its narrative skeleton, the tracks are peppered with dialogue lifted straight from the film, delivered by Don himself (as Don Cusack). It isn’t long before you begin to get the impression that these allusions to the film would have worked better as a collection of good ol’ fashioned samples rather than mediocre reenactments. That being said, there most likely were clearance (and financial) issues that probably made this move unfeasible. To make things worse, the skits aren’t broken up into separate tracks, but are instead tacked on to the end of songs, making listening to the album in its entirety more than once that much more frustrating.
