Little Dragon @ The Roxy Theatre 8/15/11 (Live Review)

Fresh from the July 25th release of their third album, Ritual Union (Peacefrog Records), Little Dragon came through the famous Roxy club in West Hollywood eager to perofm new material to an intimate and elated crowd. Immensely talented, the Swedish quartet functions organically and collectively, as all members of the group substantially contribute to the overall sensation of the music: the synths are deep, the basslines heavy and pronounced, with (nu)jazz percussion facilitating movement between the soloists and the beautiful Japanese-Swedish vocalist Yukimi Nagano.

The show began with the opening track from their new album; title track “Ritual Union,” a tune threaded together with dark and hollow synthesizers with enough bounce to get a solid two-step going. An effective and delightful warm-up leading up to the equally soulful and effervescent second track …

FunkinEven Exclusive Mix (Podcast)

FunkinEven

Exclusive Mix

At times on the dance, it’s all about the boogie. That familiar bassline, that aura of nostalgia and the ever-present vibe that is funk. This is what FunkinEven excels at greatly; creating something familiar and fresh simultanesouly. A staple on the always-present Eglo Records (which features fellow producers Floating Points and ARP 101), he has solidified a sound that borders the genres of acid, funk, boogie and early Chicago house. It’s surely his own brand of music, which is dancefloor-worthy at any given time.

But it was a little surprising to hear Murphy take over Minnisota Public Radio (home of Gerrison Keillor) and play (and talk about) records by Talking Heads, The Cars, Harry Neilson and Bruce Sprinsteen (covering Suicide).

You can hear the whole program here.

Tom Tom Club: Putting the “Us” in Genius

You don’t have to be short and cute to be in the Tom Tom Club, but it doesn’t hurt. Nearly 30 years after “Genius of Love” conquered airwaves, dancefloors, Quinceaneras, Bar Mitzvahs and backyard birthday BBQs, Tina Weymouth takes the stage in flaxen pigtails, a silver sequin mini-dress and a teal guitar. Still looking like the coolest chick downtown, Weymouth together with drummer/husband/fellow ex-Talking Heads founder Chris Frantz and their air-tight Club, turn Santos Party House into a sanctuary for storm-weary New Yorkers. As they launch into the opener, “Suboceana,” the rain outside is soon forgotten and the only wetness on anyone’s mind is the sweat flying off our bouncing bodies. There is inevitably much jump-up going down on Lafayette as the influential and perennial side project to one …

Fatboy Slim & David Byrne ft. Santigold “Please Don’t” (MP3)

What happens when a musician who can do no wrong collides with a DJ who lately can do no right? Whether of not you like this collab between David Byrne and Fatboy Slim will ultimately depend on whether you find Santigold to still be charming. One things for certain, it’s much better than Norman Cooks BPA collab project from last year.
