Karriem Riggins Announces “Alone Together” Album On Stones Throw + “Moogy Foog It” (MP3)

Karriem Riggins to release solo debut “Alone Together,” instrumental hip hop album, on Stones Throw, October 23rd.

Karriem Riggins is best known as a jazz drummer and hip hop producer for artists like Common, Slum Village, Talib Kweli and The Roots, but he doesn’t categorize himself as anything but an artist. He advises younger musicians to do the same.

“You don’t have to put yourself in a box…there’s so many different ways to go,” Riggins says.

A student of late jazz bassist Ray Brown, he tours with another Brown protégé, Grammy Award winner Diana Krall. In 2011, he collaborated with former Beatle Paul McCartney in concert and on “Kisses on the Bottom,” McCartney’s first studio release in five years. Names of some of the jazz artists he’s backed reads like the genre’s …

Through the voices of a star-studded cast of writers, filmmakers, actors, musicians, photographers, designers, and spoken word artists including Chris Rock, Spike Lee, Rosie Perez, Branford Marsalis, Talib Kweli, and Saul Williams, “Brooklyn Boheme” pays homage to the black arts movement that flourished in Fort Greene, Brooklyn throughout the mid-80′s and 90′s. “Brooklyn Boheme” speaks to experiences familiar to many artistically significant neighborhoods across the US – the formation of a thriving community in the wake of inequality and marginalization, the creative potential of those communities, and …

The Away Team, Scars & Stripes (Review)

The Away Team

Scars & Stripes

Released by IWWMG/Jamla/Duckdown

North Carolina might have saved hip-hop for a year or two (too bad that was circa 2003 or 2005 depending on your entry point). Khrysis is one of the best producers of the Fruity Loops era. That compressed sound was made for the digital generation and is still easy on the ear when done right. 9th Wonder & Khrysis are descendants of the Native Tongues, that was clear from the outset, why else would the marquee group of their movement be called Little Brother. But the cast on the fractured in-between has to be Da Beatminerz' crackling sound which kept the Boot Camp Clik on the borderline of backpack and blackjack; an export that worked exceedingly well with the Hall Of Justus massive's burgeoning endeavors.

Cancer has become so prevalent these days that we all know at least one person, if not more, battling the disease. As such, he reached out to some of hip-hop’s best talents to record a song that emphasizes celebrating life. Backed by uplifting, piano-led production from M-Phazes, the appropriately titled “Beautiful” features verses from hip-hop heavyweight Talib Kweli, burgeoning star Big K.R.I.T., and up-and-coming rapper-singer Outasight.
