Hip-hop titans and corporations have long flocked to each other for increased mutual brand recognition. Cristal painfully learned that you don’t piss off a major demographic, but for every cautionary tale, there are many more partnerships that actually work. Last night, URB checked out the launch of Qream, the latest partnership between liquor giant Diageo and Pharrell Williams, at the New York Public Library Cynics that we are, we were expecting a bottle stamped with the imprimatur of Williams; the type of deal where name means more than brain and the rapper can quickly snag the easiest check of the year. Don’t you love Mos Def’s voice? This song is ok, I just wanted more Mos Def in this track and less of whatever happened after his part; especially when the song got to something about a volvo/many volvos and when Kanye spat, “If I’m a douche, put me in your coochie.” The beat was fine but after the first three minutes it lost me and just became redundant and sleepy. We’ll admit, it’s felt like a bit of a rough summer. Nevermind the oil spills, record heat and Lebron James, there’s been plenty of downers on the musical landscape as well—EDC, Love Parade, HARD LA. It’s enough to make you want to sit through a 3rd screening of The Last Airbender just to escape it all. But it hasn’t been a completely wasted summer.
