Hypnotic Brass Ensemble “Bulletproof Brass” EP Preview

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble proudly present their new release titled “Bulletproof Brass,” a 6 song mini album showcasing this family band’s unrivaled musicianship and universal appeal.

Spring 2011 saw the group reform (like Voltron) in their native Chicago to record a selection of many new songs they have written over the past few years touring and recording. Mesmerizing melodies and pulsating rhythms that sound from another world are like a remedy or tonic to the listener in this digital age of over produced music. Bonafide, raw, and unadulterated; HBE’s music grips the listener and brings them on a trip to another world teaching the true value and meaning of music.

Bandleader Hudah explains:
“The EP ‘Bulletproof Brass’ is part of the next mission for HBE. The stage in our quest for completely …

SATURN NEVER SLEEPS (Info + Interview)

Beat-zealot King Britt and his lady and vocal-tronic counterpart Rucyl came together earlier in the summer to create an enigmatic dedication to Sun Ra titled “Saturn Never Sleeps”. Using tripped-out visuals and atmospheric rhythms and effects, it evolved from a dedication to a regular party to promote ground-breaking sound and dynamic visual and audible euphoria all at once. In order to get the most engaging and pure perspective of the event, we took some time to chat with King Britt and Rucyl.

URB: How did the idea of Saturn Never Sleeps come about?

King: We were asked to curate a night coinciding with the Sun Ra exhibit at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philly.. So we did a night that took microedits of his music and created a whole new interpretation of his sound….and …

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are a family, literally. Born in Chicago, these 8 brothers are all sons of their father Phil Cohran, who was a songwriter and trumpeter for Sun Ra. With a heavy upbringing in the jazz tradition, the brothers also started listening to hip …

Love in Outer Space

Released by City Hall Records

I rate Sun-Ra, but probably in a really uncool way. I don't get all the noodly jazz-fest improv stuff, but love all the poppy 3.5 minute accessible tunes. This one is my favourite. I love the way the drums crumble into the midrange, the looseness of the instrumentation too, the innocence of the lyrics. Such an upbeat little track but there's something really sad and mournful about it that I can't put my finger on.
