Stones Throw Launches $10 Subscription Service

Stones Throw has announced the launching of a new subscription service, offering all of the label’s releases, plus a slew of subscriber-only specials for the low low price of just $10 per month. Subscribers will be treated to new releases by Homeboy Sandman, The Minimal Wave Tapes Vol. 2 and M.E.D.’s Classic Instrumentals, and can expect upcoming releases from J. 5 Questions With Mayer Hawthorne

Blue-eyed soulja Mayer Hawthorne recently hit the road in support of his new joint, How Do You Do.  The former DJ-turned crooner (turned Vince Vaughn look-a-like) has worked with random acts while doing all sorts of TV spots after his 2008 single “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out” pushed him toward stardom.   He’s since worked with Snoop Dogg, collaborated with Ed Banger Records, and was name checked by ?uestlove.   His career is in full swing— his new project has the markings of old Motown but touches of modern slang and even some boogie.   His vintage suits, nerdy glasses and compositions have made him a darling within the industry as well as with fans who flock to catch him live with his band, The County.

URB quickly caught up with Mayer in early December while he and his posse were (literally) on Broadway, celebrating news of their upcoming gig on Letterman.  Given his hectic schedule, Mayer made time for a quick Q&A with URB. …MORE

Roc C – Starchild feat. Alchemist (prod. by Alchemist) (Video & MP3)

Roc C’s album “Stoned Genius” is in stores December 13th via Kash Roc Entertainment!! The former Stones Throw MC, representing Oxnard, CA, is back with another full length album packed with guest appearances from Freeway, Termanology, Rapper Big Pooh, Blu, Charli2na, Oh No, Alchemist and more and features guest production from Madlib, Oh No, Alchemist, Lee Bannon and others.

Today, enjoy the first official leak from the album for the song “Starchild” featuring Alchemist on both production and on vocal duties. “Starchild” is from the first single to the album, which is out now.

R.I.P. Dam-Funk Drummer Jovan Coleman (J-1)

Cleveland-born, Los Angeles-based producer/drummer Jovan ‘J-1′ Coleman has passed away in Sweden. Coleman was a regular on the LA beat scene, most notably performing as one-third of Dam-Funk’s Master Blazters. He also released a series of beat tapes and podcast for Montreal-LA live art/music collective and gallery HVW8. …MORE

STREAM Erykah Badu DJ Set (Video)

We try play it cool and not to gawk to hard at corporate-sponsored music marketing, even when that marketing comes from Red Bull, possibly the only product in the last 15 years to have actually revolutionized nightlife culture (Red Bull and vodka anyone?). But damn if the energy drink giant’s most recent Music Academy didn’t deliver the goods like no other  brand on earth.
