Nas and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley are releasing their highly-anticipated collaborative studio album, Distant Relatives on Tuesday, May 18. And a month-long tour with opener Nneka is set to kick off three days later. The album title refers not only to the bond between the artists, but the connection to their African ancestry, which inspired the album both musically and lyrically. It features several guest appearances including Lil Wayne, K’NAAN and Stephen Marley. In their own words: “What we’re about to do right now is go back. Back to a time when rap’s greatest hits were created in basement soundrooms, not corporate boardrooms. When dancehall and hip-hop music was all about moving the crowd not “moving units.” We met up with them at the very posh Sunset Marquee Hotel in West Hollywood.

“The world is moving in a very weird direction,” says Andrea Echeverri from her home in Bogota, Colombia. The woman, with her son’s playful Spanish in the background, is one-half of Bogota’s pioneering rock band, Aterciopelados, who vow to continue doing what they do: make music of mythological sounds and indisputable success. Her story is one of harnessing music’s raw current to demand social change, and Echeverri embodies a socially aware musical archetype. Whereas male bands historically define rock music, Echeverri forged her own niche and, thereby, a new space for women.
Nas and Damian Marley have an album coming out on May 18th and a globe-trotting tour to support it. The album, Distant Relatives, was produced by Marley and includes the singles “As We Enter” and “Strong Will Continue,” and appearances from Lil Wayne, K’NAAN, and Stephen Marley. The artwork was also unveiled today, and was shot by Nabil Elderkin and designed by Nesta Garrick.
Nneka will be opening.
Tickets on-sale April 2nd via Ticketmaster. Plans to tour Africa (!!!) will be announced this summer.
