Squarepusher “Cryptic Motion” (and Mr. Oizo Remix) (MP3)

Squarepusher has been riding the Jaco Pastorius slap-bass shtick for a few albums now—and I’ll admit it’s kinda worn out it’s welcome—but this new single off his upcoming Shobaleader album for Ed Banger has some focus we’ve not heard from Mr. Jenkins in a minute. And of course, since it’s Ed Banger, Mr. Oizo gives the whole thing a more electro dance floor polish.

Ah- the bass solo. Few things in music are more masterbatory. Two years ago, Tom Jenkins (aka Squarepusher) stepped onto a London stage before an audience we have to assume was 90% male, armed only a bass guitar and amplifier. And now the results of that night can be yours via Solo Electric Bass, an album from that night being issued on Warp, Aug 17.
