Die Antwoord Perform Live With Aphex Twin (Video)

Those who still raise a questioning eyebrow at South African rave-rap duo Die Antwoord (guilty) have yet another hurdle to overcome in the mission to de-legitimize the overnight sensations, as Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er joined non-other than experimental electronic godhead Aphex Twin onstage this weekend at the London Electronic Dance Festival.

The pair came onstage donning head-to-toe bunny suits and began rapping over Richard James’ dubstep beats while the crowd went predictably ape-shit.

LV feat. Okmalumkoolkat – Boomslang (Video)

Prepare for one of the most massive releases ever from Hyperdub.

Hyperdub is going on a serious roll at the moment; with the announcement of the long-awaited Darkstar LP finally coming in October as well as upcoming singles from King Midas Sound and (Scratcha) DVA, there’s one more massive bit that’s about to be unleashed:  LV’s upcoming ode to Kwaito (South African house), “Boomslang”. While it may be a different sort of release for LV, who’s known for evocative and intricate rhythms around the 140 BPM range, he steps up massively here not only with a banging beat but with the vocal wisdom of Okmalumkoolkat (try saying that ten times fast). Along with that, this video should whet the appetite of anyone who’s ready to take over the dancefloor. This could very well be one of the best tunes of the year. Video for “Boomslang” after the jump…

Next Stop… Soweto – Township Sounds From The Golden Age Of Mbaqanga (Review)

Township Sounds From The Golden Age Of Mbaqanga

NEXT STOP... SOWETO

With Next Stop... Soweto, Strut trace some of the amazing music that often only appeared on short run 45s at the time; rare lost gems deftly culled from the '60s + '70s South African "township jive sound." Featuring music recorded primarily for the local market, the album takes the listener far beyond the accepted township jive template into fusions with jazz, gospel, rumba, funk and traditional mining songs. It delves into the golden age of mbaqanga. Jazz had been a fixture in South African music since the ‘50s and jive (or mbaqanga) initially emerged a decade later as a fusion combining elements of rural Zulu music and harmony vocal styles with Western instrumentation. You can hear influences from American R&B and '60s rock and surf, in the same way ska and rocksteady developed in Jamaica. And if you like desert blues from Sahara, you will also like the fusion of mbaqanga.
