Artists Design for Soundscreen Design Summer 2009 Collection

Here’s some cool artwork for band gear designed by L.A.’s Brian Roettinger/Hand Held Heart, Montreal’s Seripop, and Chicago’s Jay Ryan/The Bird Machine. They lend a hand to styling Soundscreen Design’s summer collection featuring No Age, Gang Gang Dance, Deerhoof, Handsome Furs, Fucked Up, Liars, Battles, The National, and Pelican.

You can grab the gear (I like the Deerhoof hoodie) at record stores and specialty boutiques, along with Soundscreen Design’s and participating bands’ websites. It’s nice to see more art and thought going into merchandise, and Soundscreen Design is owned by Insoud aka the folks with other cool indie art projects.

Arctic Monkeys Humbug First Response

Drowned in Sound posted a song-by-song recap of Humbug, and writer Sean Adams concludes:
“Probably not the album your average Oasis fan would want them to make (they won’t find it unlistenable, it’s no Liars-like ear-fuck). Possibly not the classic rock album that will assure them an Iron Maiden like future. Definitely an interesting clusterfuck of textures, ideas, time changes and production suss, topped off with Mr. Turner’s lyrical dexterity. The whole record (’cept ‘Cornerstone’) inhabits a haunting, misty, murky swamp land but it’s hardly some brash metal record that the Black Sabbath mentions in interviews hinted at or a meddling Josh Homme could easily have attempted to turn it into. Humbug sounds resolutely head and shoulders above most indie-rock records released this year and is certainly the sound of a band doing as they please, …

No nonsense from thecocknbullkid (mp3)

With some aggressive attitude and banging club pop sounds, Urb Next 100-aire thecocknbullkid is the latest Brit to jump the pond and bring her not-so-candy-coated tunes to the States. Her debut Querelle EP is out today and to celebrate she’s doing the mixtape/remix thing.

Known offstage as Anita Blay, thecocknbullkid brings a sound with dark edges to the pop beats. Mixing sex and death, love and pain and plenty of dry British wit, this lady is ready to stake her place in the crowded musical landscape. Her four track EP is filled with dance sounds topped by biting lyrics. Production comes from the likes of Radioclit among others, and for her forthcoming debut LP, she’s working Gonzales, whose previous credits include production for Feist, Peaches and Jamie Lidell.

Arctic Monkeys ‘Conerstone’ Debut Live @ APW (Video)

Saturday the folks at All Points West were treated to two new Arctic Monkeys songs, “Potion Approaching” and the debut of “Conerstone.” It goes a little something like this:Tell me where’s your hiding place. Worried I’d forget your face? And I’ve asked everyone, I’m beginning to think ‘Did I dream you all along?’… I smelled your scent on the seatbelt, I kept my shoulders to myself. Hmm. Well, I don’t know about that seatbelt thing, but it sounds really great. Most songs have some incomprehensible lyrics anyway, and I prefer the accent!
