Feist, Metals (Review)

Feist

Metals

Released by Cherrytree/Interscope

Something is telling us Feist's social scene is anything but broken. After breaking through in a major way in 2007, the Canadian probably found all sorts of new friends, admirers & one-cell organisms in her mix; perhaps the 4 Grammy noms in 2008 had something to do with that, the spots with Stephen Colbert or maybe the SNL performance in late 2007. There is no danger Feist will ever occupy the pop territory of a Cheryl Crow but there was something just a bit unnecessary about the number of video vignettes that preceded this release (alright this one was kinda cool).

Radiohead and Portishead To Perform on Fallon Next Week (Video & MP3)

Two of our three favorite musical heads (the third being Bucket-) are scheduled to perform next week on Jimmy Fallon, which might just cause our DVRs to melt down in ’90s alterna-swoon. Radiohead will appear on the show Oct. 3, following what has already been a JohnnyGreenwoodpalooza series of events in NYC that included appearances on SNL and Colbert Report, as well as two shows at the Roseland Ballroom.

But even more exciting is news that enigmatic trip-hop innovators Portishead will take the Fallon stage on Oct. 5. The trio is in the neighborhood to perform at the All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival, which was curated by the band. This will mark the first time (so far as we can tell from YouTube) that Portishead will appear live on American television. But feel free to correct us on that.

If this video from SNL was the highlight of your weekend, I applaud you. It’s awesome and it almost–almost–redeems Julian Casablancas. Be warned, the boombox is not a toy!

Fred Armisen’s Punk Rock Past (Video)

Lots of folks are excited about this weekend’s SNL skit that featured cast member Fred Armisen leading a fictional  ’80s hardcore band Crisis of Conformity, now middle-aged performing at Armisen’s daughter’s wedding. More than just a funny gag, the group—which also featured Dave Grohl in an awful greying ponytail wig—hit all the right cues when it comes to this semi-forgotten punk rock sub-genre. From the Reagan fascism references to Armisen’s Darby Crash-meets-Herny Rollins stage postures, and the song, “Fist Fight In A Parking Lot” that could have easily come off your old Black Flag cassette tapes.

Off course, Armisen has genuine punk rock credentials, starting his entertainment career in the Chicago math-rock band Trenchmouth. And Armisen got into a serious discussion of punk rock in an URB feature last spring. Here’s some of our favorite clips of Armisen waving his punk flag high.
