Voodoo Music Experience – Artist in Focus: Skrillex

With the King of Dubstep, Skrillex, closing out the Voodoo Music Experience this Sunday, our friends at Red Bulletin have compiled a list of the top five (non-remix) tracks attributed to said DJ/Producer.  Like him or not, there is no denying that he has helped to merge what was once thought a sub-genre of the EDM scene, he has been detrimental in putting mainstream eyes, not just on Dubstep but on the EDM culture period.

From our friends at Red Bulletin:

5. With You, Friends (Long Drive)

Why? We know, we know… where’s ‘My Name Is Skrillex’ and ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll (Will Take You To The Mountain)’? But ‘With You, Friends (Long Drive), off ‘Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites’ EP is a surprising change of pace, especially off the original.

A Guy Called Gerald Calls Deadmau5 A “Greedy Rat Head Fuck” – Anti-Semitic?

UPDATE: We didn’t catch this when reading A Guy Called Gerald’s scathing statement about Deadmau5, but is the line “The only button you and people like you are interested in pushing is a nuke for the Palestinians.” an anti-semitic slur towards the presumably jewish Joel Zimmerman? Deadmau5 seems to think so in his response:

“i dont give a fuck. esp with the anti-sematic statement about ‘nuking palestine’ ??? what an ignorant fuck. im not going to even give him the time of day. waste of time. let him go back to being no longer relevant.”

This just got a whole lot weirder.

So much for civil discourse. In a posting on his blog, veteran UK electronic producer A Guy Called Gerald lashed out at Deadmau5, calling him a “Greedy Rat Head Fuck,” over the EDM star’s recent blog post claiming that when it comes to live performance, almost all of the big name superstars (and everyone else) are just “pressing play.” …MORE

UPDATED: Deadmau5 SLAMS Madonna, Skrillex, Guetta

The authenticity wars in dance music continue, with Deadmau5 taking aim at fellow superstar performers David Guetta and Skrillex in the lastest issue of that arbitrator of authenticity, Rolling Stone. But he saved the harshest comment for Madonna, with whom he got into quite the shitstorm with following her “Molly” comment at Ultra Music Festival. …MORE

?uestlove, Black Star, Skrillex, D’Angelo, Radiohead: Bonnaroo 2012 Review

Bonnaroo 2012 did not follow the DJ craze like most fest this year are doing, having only one stage dedicated to dubstep, house, trance, etc… But they did book a few stellar acts to keep the Bonnaroovians (yes, the word exist) satisfied. Skrillex delivered his set on what looked like an outdated space ship from a ’70s Buck Rogers flick. Me personally, I would have gone Klingon Vessel.

Martyn Calls American Dubstep The Nu-Nu-Metal

Nobody like the old fart who criticizes what the kids are into these days. Unless of course that veteran music-maker and performer is absolutely right. As has been said before, the American version of dubstep that has achieved massive popularity has evolved to have little to do with the music’s roots, and a lot more to do with the sound of ’90s nu-metal. One person who knows the difference is Dutch producer Martyn, who was one of the few non-English DJs to infiltrate the London dubstep scene almost ten years ago. In an interview with the Guardian, Martyn said:

It [American dubstep] has very little to do with me! Dubstep in the U.S. has taken the place of nu metal. An electronic music rave in America now is like a Limp Bizkit concert 10 years ago. If you listen to a Skrillex set, it’s basically just an orgasmic reaction every three minutes. It has little to do with what dubstep was really all about, which was sort of a meditation on bass. Now it’s like a caricature of that in the US.

Granted, there’s a lot more scantily-clad young people at a modern rave versus a Limp Bizkit show (less fear of rape?), but given the sonic similarities between U.S. dubstep and Korn, it’s hard to ignore the dismiss Martyn’s statement completely. All part of America killing dance music, we guess.
