I LOVE THIS CITY (San Francisco; San Diego) Phase 2 Lineups and Dates Announced. (Video)

Love is in the air for two of my favorite cities in the world — San Francisco and San Diego.  In what can only be described as a ‘massive California electronic event’  occurring through Memorial Day Weekend (May 25th and May 26th at AT&T Park in San Francisco and May 27th at the Cricket Wireless Amphitheater in San Diego), the ambitious event has pulled together the yes that electronic music has to offer.

With more than a few of our favorite artists, playing the event, this is definitely a can’t miss proposition for those of you looking for something to take up that Memorial Day Weekend slot.

Artists that you can definitely look forward to seeing at the event include: …

DOWNLOAD Free Compilation From Skrillx’s OWSLA Label (MP3)

Skrillex might seem like a one man EDM juggernaut, headlining sold out shows around the world and appearing on magazine covers as the new face of dance music. But 24-year-old Sonny Moore doesn’t do it on his own. He’s long been surrounded by a crew of friends and fellow producers who are pushing each other’s music and career trajectories, even if Skrillex is the one being blinded by the spotlight. …MORE

Ableton Inventor Calls Skrillex “Cliché”

It’s been a good week for dubstep superstar Skrillex after nabbing three Grammys on Sunday. But here’s something he might not like to hear. Experimental German musician and Ableton co-inventor Robert Heinke (Monolake) takes some digs at Skrillex in a new Resident Advisor interview. Speaking to RA editor Todd Burns, Heinke said of Skrillex:

You seem like the type of person who would have to go out of your way to listen to Skrillex.
I’m curious. And I learned to skip my prejudice, you know. There are a lot of reasons why I could say I hate this kind of music. But then, on the other side, I think I should at least try to understand what makes people like this stuff so much.

What did you figure out from listening to him? Anything? Anything positive?
Hah. Well, first of all as a technique his use of contrast is of course very intriguing. Even if I don’t like how he executes it. Like, what kinds of contrasts he is choosing and what kinds of sounds he’s using and what kind of clichés. His success seems to be based on this contrast between cheesy melodies and the evil dubstep cliché. And, without the contrast, it would be completely unbearable. If it would be only the evil dubstep cliché sounds you would immediately want to turn it off after ten minutes. If it would be only the cheesy melodies and vocals, then it would be unbearable. The combination is what makes it interesting to me.

More than anything, I find it very exhausting to listen to.
It’s absolutely exhausting. And that is the very interesting thing. It’s something you listen to for the very first time and you think, “oh, wow.” And you listen to it the second time and you think “ooof.” I believe that my music works exactly the other way around. You listen to it the first time and it’s kind of “Yeah, hmm, it’s OK.” You listen to it ten times and you think, “Hmm, interesting detail here.”

Heinke then goes on to acknowledge clichés within his own world of experimental music, but considering that Skrillex performs live using Ableton, that logo on his computer screen might make him cringe a bit every night onstage if he reads this. …MORE

Foo Fighters & Deadmau5 at The Grammys

Last nights Grammy awards had plenty of predictability (Adele swept everything, tears for Whitney Houston) and a couple surprises (Skrillex nabbed best new artist, lots of women want to get beat by Chris Brown). And then there was the much anticipated collaboration with between The Foo Fighters and Deadmau5, who performed the remix of “Rope” which was nominated or Best Remix (Skrillex nabbed that too).

And while only the second half of the tune got the remix treatment (a whole 1:30 seconds), it certainly didn’t offend the sensibilities like some predicted. The producers were even smart enough to dress up some suits in the audience with Mau5heads, showing that they at least understand part of dance music’s current appeal—playing dress up.

Deadmau5 To Rock With Foo Fighters At The Grammys

David Guetta Also To Perform With Lil Wayne and Chris Brown

Dance music’s cognoscenti (ie—those who pay work in that neck of the music business) are stoked at the announcement that EDM will get it’s share of the spotlight at this year’s Grammy Awards. Nominee Deadmau5 will perform live with The Foo Fighters, while dance-pop crossover sensation David Guetta will raise his hands behind the decks along with Chris Brown and Lil Wayne.

This has already been a red-letter year for dance music makes and fans as far as the traditionally conservative Grammys are concerned. Dubstep sensation Skrillex leads the nominee pack with five to his name, including Best New Artists (the first EDM performer to be nominated.) Deadmau5, Guetta, Swedish House Mafia and Duck Sauce also racked up nods in 2012. But even though Dance Music has had its own categories since 2003, the award show has struggled to find a place onstage for performances by acts whose stage activity involves little more than pushing buttons. …MORE
