Murs Exclusive Interview

Respected MC Murs built his name and reputation on bringing his unique brand of truth and creativity to hip-hop. His current release Love and Rockets Vol. 1: The Transformation, a collaboration with super-producer Ski Beatz, is just what the title suggests: a treatise on relationships, life, and evolution. Murs emphasizes that this album’s theme is about the “balance of yin and yang” and that his goal was “to make something, positive, powerful, and inspiring.” Whether it is through touring, his music, or his annual Paid Dues Festival, Murs works hard to create the music that his fans expect while not being afraid to show his evolution as a man. …MORE

Murs :: “316 Ways” (Prod. by Ski Beatz) (Video)

Murs has a new collaboration album out with producer Ski Beatz, Love & Rockets Vol. 1: The Transformation. The first video show the LA-based rapper showing off his recently shorn dreads on the streets of NYC and in a basement boxing gym. Not the most original metaphor out there, but much like Murs’ always fierce delivery and Ski Beatz’s boom-bap and soul-sample sound, there’s always room for more of the good stuff.

Curren$y – Pilot Talk II (Review)

Curren$y

Pilot Talk II

Released by DD172

This past summer Spitta floored us with his major label debut. His hyper-visual wordplay delivered in that unmistakable drawl of his seemed to be a perfect, if unlikely, match for Ski Beatz's smooth, crisp production. That album yielded a few classics, and while I can't necessarily say the same for it's follow-up, the formula hasn't really changed since. Somehow the tone of this project has shifted from it's predecessor despite all the same basic factors being left in place. If Pilot Talk was the daylight that showcased Curren$y's talent to ...

Ski Beatz – 24 Hour Karate School (Review)

Ski Beatz

24 Hour Karate School

Released by DD172 / Def Jam

There's a point where you just stop caring about certain projects. Detox crossed that threshold a long time ago, and last spring, after narrowly missing it's most recent intended drop date, 24HKS joined it's ranks. (Funny how both projects involve legendary producers). While Dre's perpetual delays are undoubtedly caused by an almost OCD-like level of perfectionism, the pushbacks in Ski's case seem to mostly be due to industry politics. It's been almost a year since the much buzzed-about "Taxi," featuring Mos Def, hit the blogs. Ten months later, only it's ...

Curren$y – Pilot Talk (Review)

Curren$y

Pilot Talk

Released by Roc-A-Fella / Def Jam

Five years ago Curren$y was a sidekick. The only New Orleans MC garnering any type of real national attention was Lil Wayne, and as his lablemate at the time, Spitta was languishing on the Cash Money roster, fighting for mic time on mixtapes like The Dedication 2. I'm going to be dead honest, back then there simply was nothing special about the droopy-faced rapper with the drawling flow. His subject matter was tired and cliche (cars, women, guns, money), he lacked charisma, and to top it all off, he almost ...
