The Flowers of Hell – Come Hell or High Water (Review)

The Flowers of Hell

Come Hell or High Water

Released by Unfamiliar Records

With half of the band based in London and the rest of in Toronto, the Flowers Of Hell are a trans-Atlantic space rock orchestra, a modern big band. Made up of 16 give or take experimental musicians, they mix orchestral and rock instrumentation mainly creating wordless pieces that explore the meeting points of classical and blues-based music. Their name comes from the old blues ideal that the pleasure of the listener is born from the misery & toil of the musician. Their second album Come Hell Or High Water ...

The Delta Mirror – Machines That Listen (Review)

The Delta Mirror

Machines That Listen

Released by Lefse

Los Angeles trio The Delta Mirror announce their arrival with the brilliantly-textured debut, Machines That Listen. Each track on the conceptual album takes place in a different room in a hospital, an increasingly popular topic in indie music as of late. Themes of mortality and separation are heavy on the record. From the opening hip-hop infused "It Was Dark And I Welcome The Calm," The Delta Mirror carve out their own ambient niche that flows gorgeously over nine panoramic tracks. Craig Gordon and David Bolt have been making music together for a decade and the seamless integration of their hip-hop roots into the immersive soundscape is remarkable. Equally impressive is the economy of words on the album. The listener is left contemplating lines that at a cursory glance seem pedestrian. It's the subtleties of the delivery that reveal the cloaked meanings behind certain songs. A brooding baritone reminiscent of Interpol's Paul Banks anchors the melodies with occasional assistance from bassist Karrie K's contrasting backing vocals.

The Besnard Lakes – The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night (Review)

The Besnard Lakes

The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night

Released by Jagjaguwar

It’s difficult to make psychedelica-tinged classic rock stand out from the genre's storied pioneers. And it’s even harder to update that sound without wading into nostalgic waters, but Canadian indie-rock group The Besnard Lakes can claim successes on that shore with their brand of gritty, atmospheric rock. On their latest, The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night, the four-piece band—started by husband and wife Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas—continue in their Polaris Prize-nominated trajectory, melding traditional guitar-driven rock with impassioned crescendos, trippy vocal harmonies and sophisticated layers.

A Place to Bury Strangers “Keep Slipping Away” (Video)

More tour dates means another ear-slitting video for the masses.

Perhaps a cautionary tale of what happens when one spends too much time in front of the TV and gets sucked into the world of technology, “Keep Slipping Away” is the latest video from the Brooklyn trio and brings out Ackerman’s maniacal tendencies. His obsession with sounds and images is all-consuming and seems to be the cause for his decaying on-camera romance. When it looks like you’re a lobotomy patient, would you expect a happy ending?
