Percussion Lab Announces “Cambio” Compilation – Available Now (MP3)

The venerable New York institution Percussion Lab has grown significantly over the past seven years; from an eclectic radio show to a full-fledged web-streaming party bonanza; previous guests include the likes of Scuba, SBTRKT, Dorian Concept, Daedelus, Krystal Klear and way too much more to add to this list. Needless to say, the Percussion Lab family is a collection of past and present NYC locals, along with previous guests that residents Braille (Praveen Sharma of Sepalcure) and Nooka Jones have maintained close ties to throughout the years. Judging by the artists compilation, there are plenty of vibes to behold. Cambio is a compilation that features exclusive tracks from previous Percussion Lab favorites such as Machinedrum, Lando Kal, and XI as well as new cuts from bubbling acts like Archie Pelago, Contakt and Enoe. Here’s what the PLAB guys had to say about this compilation and their contributions on it.

“Over the years, the bedroom producers and shy novices we championed in years past have become some of the most influential names in the world of electronic music. We’re offering this compilation of exclusive tracks as a way of continuing our mission to provide a home for producers and DJs to host their original music and mixes free of charge, and to be able to continue supporting our local community by booking the most forward thinking artists possible for our events. We hope you can help us keep doing all of this, for free, by buying some this complication full of amazing music by some our closest, oldest, and most talented friends. “

They’ve been gracious enough to share the first cut of the compilation, “Friends and Lovers” from Ghostly staple Shigeto. Check out the link to the track as well as the compilation link, post-jump.

Disco-Punk Experimentalists Exray’s Talk Movie Soundtracks, Being Musically Curious and More

Out with their new LP, entitled Trust a Robot, at the end of this month, Exray’s have not only racked up an impressive list of musical associates in their brief years as a band, but, have also managed to cement themselves into a wider cultural lexicon by being included on 2010′s soundtrack to David Fincher’s The Social Network, a cultural lexicon all its own, some would argue. Via their chat with URB, the band was able to open up about what it’s really like to receive mainstream exposure (surprisingly it’s had little effect on their self-image or DIY ethos), about their musical community (they’re played live with everyone from tUnE-yArDs to Matthew Dear), and gave us a much sought-after peek into the minds of why punky audio innovators like themselves are turning more and more toward the dance genre and to …

Listen: Shigeto’s ‘Lineage’ Mini-LP on Ghostly International (Video & MP3)

New Tour Dates Announced & Download Two Tracks

Today, Shigeto released his mini-LP entitled Lineage on Ghostly International, and you can stream the entire release via The Fader. It’s a lush half-hour session that toes the line somewhere between being electronic music tinged with hiphop, yet remaining dreamy and organic, bringing in real instruments that evoke the same kind of love we had for Floating Points’ Shadows EP. The drums are played by Shigeto himself, which he also incorporates into his live show along with live beat-making. He recently finished touring with Star Slinger and Shlohmo, and has just announced another wave of live dates which are included after the jump.

Stream Lineage here, and you can also download two tracks from the album: Lineage and Huron River Drive.

Check out the promo video for Lineage below, and follow the jump for a list of Shigeto’s upcoming tour dates:

Detroit’s Intricate Dialect Spits Ancient History (Review)

Intricate Dialect

"Kemet" LP

Released by Abolitionist Projects

A salute to the legacy of ancient Egypt, "Kemet" takes us back to a world governed by pharaohs and immortalized by the Pyramids. Intricate Dialect (I.D) combines history lessons with life lessons against a backdrop of jazz and electronic beats, giving us a fully-realized album that, just like Kemet, is sure to stand the test of time. On "Kemet" I.D channels nearly a decade worth of self-education, relaying his complex positions on both the political and spiritual. The free-flowing 11-track LP is laced with multi-layered discussions about public education, history, ...

Shigeto – ‘Full Circle’ (Review)

Shigeto

Full Circle

Released by Ghostly International

The first rule of improvisation is "Yes, and ..." Whatever has happened, it's your job to embrace and extend it. Shigeto (aka Zach Saginaw) sounds quite a bit like he's been drinking whatever the Brainfeeder guys in LA have been drinking, but his music is a parallel development. Both he and the LA crew had their imaginations hijacked by J Dilla at an impressionable age, and the results reflect common ancestry, but differing results.
