DOOMSTARKS (MF DOOM & Ghostface Killah) :: “Victory Laps” (MP3)

Lots of rappers have swagger. Far fewer have personality. But two of the games longest lasting and most enigmatic MCs, Ghostface Killah and MF DOOM, have molded themselves into characters that will live long in hip-hop lore. SO we’re more than a little jazzed on the new collaboration between Tony Starks and DOOM (DOOMSTARKS), coming out August 30th on Nature Sounds. The first release features “Victory Laps,” along with instrumentals and remixes from Madvillianz on the A-side, and Serato tone on the B-side. Not sure how that equals $25? 10 Years of Digital DJing With Richie Hawtin

This month marks the 10 year anniversary of Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva unveiling Final Scratch, the world’s first DVS (Digital Vinyl System), at the MIDEM conference in Paris. Since then, DJing has been completely revolutionized, with laptops replacing record crates and controller replacing turntables for all but the most dedicated vinyl fanatics. Sadly, the changeover seemed to culminate this year with the end of production of Technics 1200 turntables. But what was gained in the process is a DJ world that is infinately more flexible than what existed a decade ago.

We decided to take a look back at the past ten years of digital DJing through the innovations of Richie Hawtin.

It’s exciting to try and predict what 2011 will bring for DJing: so much new gear is released annually, and if you look at what’s changed in just the last 2 to 3 years, it’s clear the pace is not going to slow.

Peanut Butter Wolf Prepares 10/10/10 With New Remix (MP3)

In the past four years, what started as a heavy metal DJ set by Peanut Butter Wolf on 06/06/06 and a gospel podcast for 07/07/07  evolved into a series of themed events for 08/08/08 and 09/09/09 to coincide with each year’s special date. For 10/10/10, PBW and his Stones Throw camp evidentally decided that 10 events was a bit much for even them to pull off. So instead, they’re throwing one mega event on October 10, 2010—10 hours, 10 DJs (Baron Zen, Dam-Funk, Danny Holloway, J-Rocc, Madlib, Mahssa, Mayer Hawthorne, PB Wolf, Prince Paul, Rhettmatic), playing all 45s.

One has to wonder if anyone discussed playing all 10-inch records, or if even a mega-digger like Wolf decided that was too tricky a balancing act between sticking to a theme and keeping the party bumping. Maybe they should …

URB asked none other than DMC CEO Christie Z-Pabon to give us a road diary of a day in the life: airline-damaged gear, 3-way ties, and kismet encounters awaited, as she headed off to New Orleans, USA: “Arrived to the American Airlines terminal at JFK, and who was standing outside the door like an omen for good things to come?  1997 DMC World Champion: DJ A-Trak!! Soon enough his brother Dave (from Chromeo) joined him! I was so happy to see old friends from my first year at DMC in 1998! They flew off to Los Angeles and I was off to New Orleans…”
