Those of us who have been around long enough to remember Roy Davis Jr.’s 1996 deep house hit “Gabrielle” will recall the song’s light and breezy step, as well as the introduction of Peven Everett to the world of house music’s elite vocalist. This new version of the classic, by German duo Call Super, gets rid of almost all of the original production, retaining just the haunting ghost of the vocals and a disembodied bass line that swells up ever so infrequently amidst the newly dark and disjointed bed of acid lines and stumbling percussion. It’s a far cry from the original, but hard not to feel a nostalgic twinge nonetheless.
