Agent of Change :: The New Boyz and Paper Route Gangstaz, a retropsect

I’ve been trying to wrap my head around this Healthcare debate all month. Translation: I neglected the second in a three-part series of exclusive interviews with artists of tomorrow (b.k.a. the Agent of Change summer series). Last month I highlighted Detroit rhymesayer Finale. Luckily my URB colleagues have it covered. Below are two in-depth interviews with leaders of different, though equally innovative, movements. The first highlights The New Boyz: colorful, fun-loving maestros of the Jerkin’ revolution that’s sweeping the Southland. The second delves into the depths of the Dirty Dirty; Alabama’s Paper Route Gangstaz get gully and let loose. Both interviews were featured on URB.com earlier this month. Respect.

HARD Summer Shut Down (Video)

Already from the start something was up.

I called ahead to The Forum box office at approximately 10:21 pm because I was running late and to make arrangements to get my press tickets. The operator told me it was sold out, in an exasperated tone. So I had to explain that I already had tickets and all she could say was that things were “on standby” and no one was getting tickets at the moment. Driving past the front of the venue, about 10 minutes later, it didn’t look chaotic, but all the parking gates to get into the lot were closed. At the end of the road on the east side, I spoke with the traffic officer regarding what I should do. The lots were closed, she said there was “no place” to …

16 Bit Lolitas Embark on US Tour

The 16 Bit Lolitas (Peter Kriek and Ariaan Olieroock) create beautiful and emotional electronic dance music. When I asked them to do an exclusive DJ set for the UMF Radio show Presented by Ultra Music Festival, they turned out a tight mix that outshines the heaps of crap being put out there each week. To hear their exquisite sound you can also tune into their regular radio show on Frisky Radio.

At the end of Jul 2009, 16 Bit Lolitas embark on a United States tour. Here are the venues and dates:

Get Sidetracked With Andy Butler

Andy Butler and Hercules and Love Affair know exactly how to shake a room into an earthquake. This summer, Butler’s letting us in on some of the house and disco magic that’s turned him on at the club in his day, as well as new tracks by some of his favorite artists, like Flagranti and Daniel Wang, and a fresh cut by Hercules And Love Affair. Case in point: everything on compilation Sidetracked awakens the ants in Butler’s pants. He says, “So, one moment you might imagine me sitting on top of a speaker at a 90’s warehouse party with legs dangling and fist in the air, or another in a various state of undress dancing in my living room (daydream at your own risk…).” Cool, because I want some payback for all the shameless distraction “Blind” …

Coachella Recap: FRIDAY

Leaving the lazy river-pool at a palm tree-lined concrete oasis in Indio, CA, at 1:30 pm for Coachella, a festival goer fully expects the “10 minute drive” to take at least an hour. Entering the festival (drive, park, trek to gate, line for ticket, line for frisking) at 4:05 pm, there was just enough time for a beer with The Presets and a little chat with Crystal Method before watching the Black Keys bring down the blues before sunset. Last night, Crystal Method played their second live non-DJ set in 5 years, supporting their new album of self-produced material. After so long and with new gear, they seemed a bit antsy, but the duo’s closing set in the Sahara tent knocked the socks off everyone not weeping over the ex-Beatle singing “Yesterday,” “Helter Skelter,” and “Can’t Buy …
