STREAM Erykah Badu DJ Set (Video)

We try play it cool and not to gawk to hard at corporate-sponsored music marketing, even when that marketing comes from Red Bull, possibly the only product in the last 15 years to have actually revolutionized nightlife culture (Red Bull and vodka anyone?). But damn if the energy drink giant’s most recent Music Academy didn’t deliver the goods like no other  brand on earth.

First there was the extended interview with DOOM, something URB has been trying to hustle out of the mysterious MC for over half a decade. Now comes this mix by DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown (aka Erykah Badu), recorded live at the afterparty to her recent Madrid concert. And while Ms. Badu might not be a technical wizard behind the decks, her tune …

WATCH 100 Minute Interview With DOOM (Video)

In the world of hip-hop, few rappers are more mysterious than DOOM, the masked MC who has long kept fans and the media guessing at his intentions with bizarre live appearances by alleged imposters, allegations of theft and a severe lack of on-the-record discussions. But it appears the villainous rapper is starting to let some light into his shadowy existence. Last week we got a sample of his new track, “Retarded Fren,” recorded with Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead—surely his most high-profile release to date. And the masked on himself recently sat down for an extended interview with Chairman Jefferson Mao of Ego Trip magazine for Red Bull Music Academy. DOOM speaks extensively about working with Madlib, his various hip-hop aliases and a lot more in this 100 minute conversation. Pop some …

Sonar Festival Barcelona 2010 (Review)

Sonar By Night

Back in London and it’s taken almost a week to recover from the rave fall out that is Barcelona’s Sonar Festival. And I’m sure that’s an excuse the other 84,975 attendees can attest to too because this year was particularly special. Yes, there were the big names that played over the three days. But these are the very same acts that will be headlining every European (and many U.S.) summer festivals in 2010. On the somewhat confused Tube ride back home on UK turf, I saw posters for LCD Soundsystem headlining Wireless and Roxy Music and Dizzee Rascal, Lovebox. And yes, 30,000 people did ram out the vast, industrial expanse of the airplane hanger-like void that is Sonar By Night, to rave (or most likely rock) out to the Chemical Brothers, LCD Soundsystem, Roxy Music, Hot Chip and Dizzee Rascal. Or smooch away to the return of Air. At one delirious point I even found myself hands in the air, pumping gun finger salutes to Booka Shade’s v-drum assault as the sun was coming up on the Saturday morning.

But what felt different about this year’s festival was that it brought together a sprawling, yet tightly knit group of worldwide artists, friends, promoters and fans, all fiending the very best hip hop, techno, dubstep and electronica-inspired music of 2010. And each and every member of this global family represented to the fullest, when each and every member was on stage at Sonar By Day, performing at Sonar By Night or raving out to an off-Sonar Barcelona warehouse party. It’s the super supportive family of beat kings and queens that made this year’s event so unforgettable.

Julien Dyne – Pins & Digits (Review)

Julien Dyne

Pins & Digits

Released by BBE

Julien Dyne is a drummer from New Zealand who has worked with artists like Fat Freddys Drop and Nathan Haines. He has also been involved with Red Bull Music Academy. He brings a range of styles to Pins & Digits; it has a cosmic club vibe with Dyne's percussion, rich brass, Rhodes, bass, vibes and electronics. Pins and Digits features guests spots from some of New Zealand’s most talented musicians including the vocal talents of Mara TK (Electric Wire Hustle). He is a  musician who can play organic funk, jazz and soul, and rock a MPC and an array of analog synths. On Pins & Digits he tries to find a balance between these styles: club grooves with an eclectic range of percussion, programming and synth, and down tempo compositions. The big bass, brass and futuristic keyboard sounds are pleasant to your ears, but all this eclecticism also makes it sound a little dated, as if he’s borrowing too much from others. You can easily hear Dilla, Spacek and Flying Lotus lurking in the shadows.
