SATURN NEVER SLEEPS (Info + Interview)

Beat-zealot King Britt and his lady and vocal-tronic counterpart Rucyl came together earlier in the summer to create an enigmatic dedication to Sun Ra titled “Saturn Never Sleeps”. Using tripped-out visuals and atmospheric rhythms and effects, it evolved from a dedication to a regular party to promote ground-breaking sound and dynamic visual and audible euphoria all at once. In order to get the most engaging and pure perspective of the event, we took some time to chat with King Britt and Rucyl.

URB: How did the idea of Saturn Never Sleeps come about?

King: We were asked to curate a night coinciding with the Sun Ra exhibit at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philly.. So we did a night that took microedits of his music and created a whole new interpretation of his sound….and …

A decade’s a long time to do anything, but a decade of broadcasting intelligent, (sometimes) experimental music is kinda like working in dog years. So, really, they’re 70. Spank Rock’s B.O.O.T.A.Y Video!

%%VIDEO_CODE%%

I’ve got a confession to make: when the binocular lenses come in right at the beginning of the video, my mind immediately associated them with a full, round boot[a]y. Whether that means I’m a tad on the pervish side or that I just picked up on something they intended to happen is beyond me (although I have a feeling that it’s a combination of the two). Although surprisingly tame, where else are you going to find Addicted to Love extras getting down with Spank Rock? Not to mention the most blatant “butter face” line I’ve ever heard (peep Spank’s second verse and listen for “paper bag”). Thank you Bangers & Cash!

Wooster Collective

Adding to the annals of famous shows and last hoorahs, Sunday Dec 17th will be remembered as the day when Wooster Collective held the final show at11 Spring which found 35 artists from several continents and eras getting up over every square inch.

The line around three of the four sides of the block was itself a work of art, both conceptually – as a statement on the indoor show of mainly outdoor artists; the reverting to the fetishism of the artist as savior + gallery …

Beats Of Mind

Released by Poo-Bah

Ras G is a very expansive young beatmaker who creates sonic-scapes that play like journeys. This is the first in the Poo-Bah Records 10-inch series that he's curating. Moody and dark, uplifting and light with fragmented samples layered, Ras G is fusing his many influences into a mix that will turn your head nod into a trance.
