@delunafest @kflay Schedule it Sunday: K. FLAY (Video & MP3)

I wanted to make this very special shout out and DeLuna Festival recommendation to a rapper who is still one of the best new artists of new decade. A rapper who is a URB Magazine NEXT artist and a rapper who has dominated the URB Next boards. A rapper who has kept her ideals and continues to evolved year after year after year: her natural skills on the mic is addictive, her performances on stage is charming and charismatic, and her mixtapes are amazingly wicked (three volume mixture in 2011 entitled “I Stopped Caring in 96‘” – one of the best mixtapes of 2011)

She’s the always fresh,  K. Flay.

She performs Sunday at DeLuna – schedule it!!

Danny Brown – XXX (Review)

Danny Brown

XXX

Released by Fool's Gold

"Colder than them grits they fed slaves" are the first words heard on Danny Brown's newest full-length release XXX. Obviously, Danny knows his way around a microphone. Upon listening to his latest offering in its entirety though, one realizes there's a lot more in that line than just a simile that stomps on other rappers' similes. Hell, if anybody was nearing their 30th birthday and still struggling to be known in the music business, they would be cold too. Yes, Danny Brown is indeed 30 years old (as denoted ...

Rapper Busdriver releases ‘Computer Cooties’ Mixtape

Busdriver, a prolific rapper that has only recently made a website (citing his computer cooties) has dropped a free mixtape for download at said website.  This marks the Anti-Records signed rapper’s first foray into the free mixtape world.  Busdriver flows over tunes from Monsters of Folk, Nosaj Thing, and Wolf Parade, to name a few.  It is a cornucopia of musical genres in free mixtape form.  And just in time for the holidays!

Jewish-Black Rapper Drake Gets the ‘Heeb’ Treatment

Your favorite Jewish magazine, Heeb, interviews hip-hop black-jewish wunderkind Drake. As URB’s resident black-Jew, I’m kicking myself for not doing this interview first—even though this magazine gave the star some of his first ink (yes, actual ink) way back in our Spring 2009 Next 100 issue.

This has been a banner couple of years for us Oreos mixed kids, from the POTUS to Drake, and the ever browning American society. My friend Lacey Schwartz is even doing a documentary on being raised black and Jewish in New York. Though it’s never been easy being blended, Drake recalling, “I went to a Jewish school, where nobody understood what it was like to be black and Jewish.” But at least people know we exist now.

The Heeb writer shares some of the curiosities anybody with Drake’s background was sure to inspire, saying “It’s …

TiRon – MSTRD (Review)

TiRon

MSTRD

Released by Mixtape

From the looks of it, people are starting to get it. Of course there are people out there that live for albums or mixtapes or whatever to drop with ‘lebbindy-hundred tracks, but it seems like when that phenomena occurs, there is way too much filler to wade through. It is evident, however, that TiRon does not believe in bloated projects; MSTRD is all killer and no filler. Ten songs these days are not a lot, but that is the great thing about this project. With the number being as it is, each track has no choice but to mean something- and they do. And with everything being condensed and nothing being watered down, TiRon can do what he does best: tell his story.
