Fresno, CA rapper Fashawn’s solo debut, Boy Meets World, dropped a day after his 21st birthday. He already had several mixtapes under his belt, toured Europe and appeared on tracks with super producer The Alchemist (who produced Fashawn’s latest mixtape, The Antidote). A fatherless group home kid with a drug addict mother, he could have easily been led astray. Instead, Fashawn tempers his gritty lyrics with uplifting and hopeful messages.
The hip-hop power duo used to be pretty prevalent in the days of old[er]. Unfortunately, such groups are all-but-chillin’ in between sedimentary rock and dinosaur bones. Thank God for the Clipse because they have been holding down the two-dope-rappers niche like nobody else. With names like “Pusha” and “Malice,” it is easy to jump to conclusions and say that Clipse aren’t for the kids but here at URB, we always look before we leap. We caught up with one half of the powerhouse group (Malice) to talk Til The Casket Drops, what fuels classics and why Malice’s new book will probably give kids some much-needed insight.
As my cab pulled up to the Maloof family’s Palms Hotel, I couldn’t miss the massive “Z-Trip’s Revolution: A Party for the People” sign towering above the parking lot. Just another piece of evidence confirming DJ culture was permanently etched in the entertainment landscape. Two back -to-back nights at one of Vegas’ biggest properties (Paul Oakenfold owns Saturday’s for his Perfecto night) puts guys with records on par with the city’s comics and American Idol winners.

URB: What could possibly be going on at six o’clock in the evening?
Amanda Blank: I’m trying to see if I can apply fake eyelashes with my ten inch nails.
Someone’s going to lose an eye, huh?
Yes. I really would love to lose an eye, I really need to stop. I have like one eyelash that’s falling off.
You’d need a pirate eye patch or something.
I’ve been wearing like masquerade masks, lately. It looks bad, I’m a fuckin’ mess.
So what’s with the masquerade mask? Are you getting ready for Mardi Gras with MF Doom?
You know what? I had the idea right before Halloween. We did all these festival shows, and I got all excited to get dressed up, and get costumey, and I found all these really cool masquerade masks, and since then, I’ve been really into wearing them onstage. It was really random how I decided to do it.
