Let's talk drug of choice. Hip-hop has generally gravitated toward alcohol & marijuana with the occasional foray into hallucinogenics and nose candy (simply reference Raekwon's OB4CL, pretty sure there's a few tracks where Ghost & Rae are snorting in the booth). These days hip-hop's medicine cabinet houses anything from adderall (Danny Brown eats them like TicTacs) to molly to cups of promethazine. Gangrene (Alchemist & Oh No) are here to introduce the South American alternative to absinthe, an apparently delightful little cocktail named Ayahausca.

Evidence is that dude. Many heads point to 2007's Weatherman as one of hip-hop's recent treasures. That first solo project, with production from Sid Roams, The Alchemist, Jake One, Babu & Ev (all of whom are back on this one, save Jake One), had a refreshingly crisp sonic blueprint, heavy on the spacy synths and brimming with soul. Having now made a switch from the lost-at-sea ABB to Rhymesayers with a Layover (EP) in between, everything is back in order for the dilated one to drop another top-drawer record.

Sacto rapper Mean Doe Green has been put on hard by noneother than Raekwon. So of course we’re checkin the latest single off his upcoming self-titled album due in April. “Gonna Need Me” is woven from pieces of Dionne Warwicks “You’re Gonna Need Me,” which exactly the kind of vintage sample we miss from too much hip-hop these days.
