R.I.P. Dam-Funk Drummer Jovan Coleman (J-1)

Cleveland-born, Los Angeles-based producer/drummer Jovan ‘J-1′ Coleman has passed away in Sweden. Coleman was a regular on the LA beat scene, most notably performing as one-third of Dam-Funk’s Master Blazters. R.I.P Aaliyah (Video)

9 years ago to this day I was playing soccer with my dad next to the Holiday Inn when the radio DJ cut in announcing that tragically Aaliyah had passed in an unfortunate plane crash in the Bahamas, where she had been filming her video for “Rock the Boat”. Aaliyah for me and many other people in the 90’s was the force that combined R&B and Hip-Hop so successfully that now it’s difficult to even imagine both things as separate.

The Princess of R&B will continue to be sorely missed to this day not only by me but a legion of people who cabbage patched and dipped to many of her songs such as the infamous Doctor Doolittle track, “Are You That Somebody” or the song from Romeo Must Die,“Try Again”,

RIP ROC RAIDA :: WORLD’S BEST TURNTABLIST

Master turntablist DJ Roc Raida (B. Anthony Williams) passed away today. Part of the original DJ collective and turntablist group the X-ecutioners, (formerly known as X-Men), Raida’s vinyl exploits quickly earned him a reputation as one of the best DJs in the world. He captured the DMC World DJ Championship in 1995 with his superb beat-juggling, seamless mixing, and flawless, ambidextrous execution. He was so talented, he could literally spin with his arms behind his back. Not only a master of the turntables, Raida was also an accomplished martial artist.

He was most recently on tour with Busta Rhymes. Busta expressed his condolences over Twitter, “I am sorry 2 say that on this day at 2:05 Sept 19th we lost another incredible life…Dj Roc Raida died 2day my personal Dj is gone… I …

Orb Member Andy Hughes Passes Away

In the second tragic passing announced today—it’s been releasd that former member of the UK ambient-house group The Orb Andy Hughes died on Jun 12 from liver failure. Hughes helped produce classic Orb albums Orblivion and Cydonia and appeared live with the group through part of the ’90s. the news of his death comes just a few hours after the passing of UK rave producer Eon (Ian Loveday) was made public. A sad day for electronic music.
