R.I.P. Ari Up – More Than Just A Punk Legend

The tragic death of Ari Up early this week has a lot of people digging out the work of her seminal dub-punk group The Slits with a renewed appreciation. But perhaps the bigger tragedy isn’t just the loss of a legend, but the fact that well into the ’00s, the dreaded visionary was still creating quality music. Her 2005 album Dread More Dan Dead was a favorite around the URB office that year, with it’s perfect combination of her vintage reggae-dub aesthetic and more modern electronic techniques. So while the rest of the web celebrates Ariane Daniele Forster aclaimed early work, we figured we’d offer up something more recent, yet equaly memorable.

M.I.A – /\/\ /\ Y /\ (Review)

M.I.A.

// / Y /

Released by Interscope

Maya is M.I.A’s third full length release, following critically acclaimed Arular and Kala. Lately she’s been in the limelight for her immature twitter beef with journalist Lynn Hirschberg who wrote the now-infamous New York Times Magazine profile on her, along with conflicts with ex-BF/producer Diplo, a clusterf!@# of a record release party in NYC, and just yesterday the cancellation of LA's HARD festival that she curated and was was meant to headline. You could call Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam a sheep in wolves' clothing: there’s a contrast between ...

Live review: VV Brown @ The Troubadour (05/12/10)

The beautiful British pop-soul singer and renaissance woman VV Brown entered the stage barefoot, tall as an amazon. She was dressed like an Egyptian Goddess; long white velvet dress with a golden loincloth, and a red stripe across her face. She was backed by a six piece band, including a 3 piece brass ensemble to funk things up from her debut Travelling Like The Light. Her style of music goes from vintage girl group sound, to rockabilly, punk and soul. The gifted singer-songwriter has the lungs of fellow brit Shingai Shoniwa of the Noisettes and the playful attitude of Janelle Monae. She had a versatile set, even including an afro-beat jam and a cover of Drake’s “Best I Ever Had,” minus the smoothness in favor of some grit. …

Massive Attack Interview

British electro-hop pioneers Massive Attack have never failed to deliver conscience, dark, deep, sexy tunes wrapped warmly in their dense experimental vibe.  The duo’s fifth studio record Heligoland is no exception. However, they’ve kept us waiting for another taste of their live LED screen, political stream, pulse-groove for the past four years. Well we can now push past that yearn as the duo launch their nine-date U.S. tour tomorrow in Toronto. URB caught the band’s Grant “Daddy G” Marshall by phone from his basement in Bristol to chat new collaborations, ’70s influences, and money saving.

D.C.’s 9:30 Club Turns 30, Online Rockumentary

Music fans may have noticed that when a band plays in the DC area, there’s a good chance it’s at the 9:30 Club. Though I have never been to DC, this is one place I would make a pilgrimage to. Once it was the center of the underground scene that thrived in the area, now it is where bands perfect their craft. While today it is in a new space, the landmark club has some truly humble beginnings and it seems to have been in the right hands for 30 years. The Washington Post published a multimedia history of the club. Informative and inspiring, it’s a reminder of the power of music when it’s not consumed by the powers that be.
