Truly tragic news today with word that Soul Train host and creator has died of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. And while the world mourns this titan of funk, soul, R&B, disco and hip-hop, we decided the only true way to honor Cornelius is to go back and watch the show he created. Having aired from 1971-2006, with over 1,100 episodes, it’s impossible to find all the incredible gems Soul Train had to offer. Fan who caught Portishead’s performance this weekend at ATP were given a real treat when the band was joined onstage by Public Enemy’s Chuck D. The hip-hop legend hit the stage halfway through “Machine Gun,” the hair-raising highlight from Portishead’s 2008 album, Third. From there, he busted out several verses from the Nation Of Millions classic “Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos.” Apparently the government is still suckas.
Los Angeles hip-hop foursome The 87 Stick Up Kids have been on their grind lately—prepping their first album, Car Keys & Rabbit’s Feet, performing monthly at legendary ladies club Crazy Girls, and even getting ready to release their first t-shirt collab, TITS x Malice x The 87 Stick Up Kids.
Here’s the video for the song “Lights, Camera,” the first single off Car Keys & Rabbit’s Feet. SK-87’s DJ Rockwell describes the clip, directed by Tyler King as “Public Enemy, the Joker’s gang from Batman and Project Mayhem.” He pretty much nails it.

URB rang up Jack Dangers in his longtime San Francisco home/studio shortly before the release of his latest album Answers Come in Dreams (Metropolis Records, October 12) to discuss gear collecting, political pigs, the best way for emerging producers to get his attention, what keeps MBM going after almost 25 years and how a socialist Brit from Swindon became one of the locals in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
URB spoke to Tricky about his forthcoming album Mixed Race – which drops in October – and dives into his thoughts on Public Enemy, Kurt Cobain, working with his brother, his accidental collaborative recording sessions, living in Paris, and how writing lyrics to his songs is like picking fruit.
