Summer Camp’s New Music Video for “Round the Moon” (Video & MP3)

Summer Camp released their new video for “Round the Moon” which got me in the greaser-like kind mood. They basically gutted an old what looks like Swedish gangster love film, nothing like Blood In, Blood out but w.e, and scored it to their song. Which If you’ve never heard of Summer Camp you are completely missing out on life. They whisper, drum, use some sorta psychedelic mind altering wavy like sounds and you can also catch them live because they’ll be touring the UK this fall.

Janelle Monae – The ArchAndroid (Review)

Janelle Monae

The ArchAndroid

Released by Bad Boy / Wondaland

I’m supposed to be a writer, yet I’m at a loss for words. I’ll try as best I can to explain what I’ve just experienced. Like most great albums, this one is kind of like a drug-trip. You know you’ve gone to a place unlike any you’ve ever visited before. You were aware of the strange emotions and consciousness expanding effects while you were on the drug, yet when you try to explain it to those who've never tried it, words seem to fail. Then again, maybe my feeble brain ...

New Territory For UNKLE (Interview)

James Lavelle, the DJ, producer, Mo’ Wax record label boss and founder of musical outfit UNKLE, is back with the fourth official UNKLE album Where Did the Night Fall. With Pablo Clements (Psychonauts) as his new sideman, they go one a new route, using primarily live instrumentation and rock/psych pop as their sonic palette. I had a talk with him about this leap into new territory, on a sunny day in Hollywood.

URB: Why do you choose to use the UNKLE tag, since there’s always been a changing cast of group members.
JAMES LAVELLE: It’s not different from why would you keep on calling it Fleetwood Mac? Many bands come and go, but when it’s not started as a traditional band, then group members come and go. The main reason is because we created an identity, and to create an …

Priestbird – Diamond + Stay (MP3)

After spending time engaged in side projects, the members of Priestbird have reunited for their second full-length album. They’ve been recording with Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard, as well as other musical wizards such as Noah Georgeson, known for his work with Joanna Newsom (among others). Here are two of their newest tracks: Diamond – a darker, grungier cut – and Stay — a more melodic, psychedelic rock throwback that you can find after the jump. Their album is slated for release later this year.

Various Artists – Afro Rock Vol. 1 (Review)

Afro Rock Vol. 1

Afro Rock Vol. 1

Released by Strut

Afro Rock Vol. 1 is one of the most important compilations of heavy original ‘70s Afro-funk and soul to be released in recent years. Originally released on record-collecting obsessive Duncan Brooker’s Kona label in 2001, the album was among the first to kick-start the thirst among jazz, funk, soul fans and "diggers" to rediscover lost music from Africa made during the ‘60s and ‘70s during a time when many countries were gaining independence and celebrating a Pan-African identity within their music. The album was one of the first to reach a far different audience to the traditional world music market and spawned many further projects and labels in its wake. Out of print since 2002, the album is being reissued on Strut in its original form with a bonus track: an unreleased psychedelic cut by Kenya’s Ishmael Jingo. It’s in poor quality though, and not necessarily a “bonus.” The album has remained influential since its release with tracks appearing on other Afro compilations and on TV and film.
