URB Magazine Is Taking A Hiatus (Not a Nap)

Tags: ,

It is with mixed emotions that we announce that URB Magazine will be taking a few month hiatus from our print publication to focus on our digital adventures and re-group to offer a new print incarnation in 2010. Here is a letter from our Co-Founder/Publisher Raymond Roker:

Dear friends, readers and clients,

In 19 years, URB has ridden the highs and lows of the print media industry. And through all of it, we have had a lot of fun staying independent and committed to our audience and brand. But no sea change has been as dramatic and as profound as what has occurred in the past 18 months. To simply blame the prevailing conditions on the financial markets is only partially accurate. We’re experiencing an incredible and sweeping shift in consumption and media habits worldwide, especially …

DJ Heat & Blu – So(ul) Amazing Three (MIXTAPE)

Tags: , , , , , , ,

Honestly, there are no longer words that matter when discussing this man, this monster of musicality. And while this disc, the third installment of his So(ul) Amazing series of mix tapes, doesn’t apparently include anything brand spankin’ new, all that’s been collected from guest spots and the like needs to be comin’ outta your speakers immediately. After a torrential release schedule that included something like two full lengths and a few mix tapes of old tyme, real boom bap over the space of a year, Domination Recordings is making available a few cuts from Tha Connection’s superb Trapeze.

You can grab “Raw Skills” and “Ill” right this moment. But you hafta wait for Hus tha King Pin’s solo disc for a little while…deal with it.

The Shaky Hands – Allison and the Ancient Eye (MP3)

There’s something vaguely Neil Young-ish about all of this. It might be the scraggly hair that doffs each dude’s head in the Shaky Hands. But regardless of what all involved appear outwardly, this tightly wound track – “Allison and the Ancient Eyes” – from the upcoming Let It Die, makes good on the vague promises that last year’s Lunglight presented. This isn’t gonna get these guys opening for Bad Religion who opens for Pearl Jam (?!?), but there’s unquestionably still places for this Portland band to take its music.

Let It Die hits shelves Sep 29 via Kill Rock Stars.

A Tale of Two Leaks

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

Charles Dickens can have his two cities. The way the comment boards have been buzzing around the Hip-Hop blogosphere, the only two things of note at the moment are Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3 and Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Pt. II, both of which leaked in the past two days. What the buildup, the leak and the early reception has proven, if anything, is that nobody knows how the fuck to handle this internet business. A brief look at the two albums:

The Blueprint 3- Jay-Z, one of the richest and most successful artists of all-time returns at 40 to continue his Blueprint series. At this point, a Jay-Z release is a global event. The man basically strong armed his way toward releasing the record on …
