DJ Babu – The Beat Tape, Vol. 2 (Review)

DJ Babu

The Beat Tape, Vol. 2

Released by Dilated Junkie

DJ Babu, of the world famous Beat Junkies and turntablist-mastermind behind the Dilated Peoples’ headnodding work, is at it again in a follow-up to his 2007 instrumental The Beat Tape Vol. 1 with the aptly named record: The Beat Tape Vol. 2. With his already impressive discography and genre-defining work on Super Duck Breaks (1996), Super Duper Duck Breaks (2000), and the Duck Season series, DJ Babu is no newcomer to the beatmaking game. A pioneer in his own right, DJ Babu has been a prominent name in hip-hop since his introduction to the culture and has contributed vast amounts of innovation through his innovative and creative musical efforts. The Beat Tape Vol. 2, like its predecessor, is an album of short one-to-three-minute instrumental beats that showcase the versatility of DJ Babu’s abilities on the wheels of steel. His work has continually evolved, providing the soundscapes to the ever-changing world of hip-hop music. On The Beat Tape Vol. 2, DJ Babu comes correct with a dark and ominous flavor, a textured, layered, and intricately composed selection of satisfying compositions.  Installments such as “Manferd,” and “What R U Doing,” are two of the tracks that reveal a subterranean coolness rarely found in hip-hop these days.

Jim Jonsin: Songs for Girls

Grammy Winner Knows What You Like

It was the summer of 2008 and two of rap music’s elite–that is, two individuals from a genre of alpha male ethos– dropped a pair of bangers, which heard T.I. and Lil Wayne crooning rather than ripping rhymes, “Whatever You Like” and ”Lollipop,” respectively.  Since concocting the sound of said-quasi-romantic classics, producer Jim Jonsin’s production resume has begun to inflate rapidly, prolifically making dirty songs for girls and the boys that love them.

John Morales – The M&M Mixes (Review)

John Morales

The M&M Mixes

Released by BBE

With The M&M Mixes pioneer Bronx DJ/producer John Morales (along with the late Sergio Munzibai) has dug through his collection of unreleased NYC underground disco anthems and proves to be more like a history lesson in the era of house music in its infancy. Morales, along with Munzibai, were the go-to team for remixes back in the day, having mixed hundreds of disco records stretching three-minute singles into twelve-minute epics all with the proper drops and breakdowns paving the way for remixers and super-producers in this age. In the past, Morales has claimed his fame by remixing some of the biggest hits during the late '70s early '80s, including "Axel F," "Rhythm of the Night," and "Dr. Beat," all providing an alternative listening experience giving fellow partygoers a reason to gyrate their asses at the discotechs.
