7 Degrees Of Horrorcore

A Reminder That Odd Future Did Not Just Invent This Shit

Seems like the name Odd Future has been on the tongue of every rap vet and industry tastemaker for the past 6 months or so. Let’s think about that word for a second — tastemaker — before reflecting on the sheer tastelessness of the subject matter that these young teens from the west coast have chosen to be their microphone M.O.

Although we can’t lie, who doesn’t enjoy some good tales of rape, pillaging, suicide, and grisly murder every now and then? Charismatic and clever as Odd Future may be — specifically the group’s frontman, Tyler the Creator — any real hip-hop head knows damn well that neither he nor his cohorts are the first to stake their claim in the shadowy terrain of the horrorcore sub-genre. Perhaps the only thing truly bothersome about Odd Future’s …

Words From The Bird :: Pigeon John Interview

From cutting his teeth at the legendary Good Life open mics in the early ’90s to rocking shows all over the world, Pigeon John has made a name for himself as one of hip hop’s most consistently outstanding live performers. Beyond the enthralling energy inherent on stage, Pigeon crafts witty, humorous records tackling the pitfalls of the human condition in his own unique way. His new album Dragon Slayer, a collaboration with Herve Salters, is void of any guest rappers or producers for the first time. The uncharted waters of Pigeon’s new music will be further explored as he takes the show on the road this fall alongside Dark Time Sunshine and DJ Abilities. Read on as we discuss the origins of his career, De La Soul, and the finer points of Taco Bell. …MORE

2 Mo’ Gin: Reef The Lost Cauze “OPG Theme”/J-Swift “I’ll Do Mine” (MP3)

Nice Pair

Last night in Philly, Prince Paul was on the wheels at a shi-shi spot, only 5 bones before 11. Sorta made me sad for us aging heads, the man that DJ’ed for Stetsasonic, brought us De La Soul, tutored 3rd Bass and helped turn the phrase Dan The Automator into something of a household name through the legendary Handsome Boy Modeling School project (has anyone heard from Dan lately?), had been reduced to rocking for a buncha Rittenhouse drunktards and deluded musician types (myself included). I guess money is money, dough.

That self-indulgence aside, I must pass along another couple of joints to check for, the first accompanied by another anecdote that all four of my readers have come to expect and revile. I don’t have satellite radio in the car but my fancy friends do; I consider it a treat …

New Souls of Mischief (produced by Prince Paul!) (MP3)

For years and years it was rumored that Prince Paul (the man behind De la Soul, Gravediggaz, Handsomeboy, Psychoanalysis, etc.) would produce an album for Souls of Mischief…well.. it’s FINALLY HERE!

Bay Area rap veterans return with a new album, Montezuma’s Revenge, due out December 1st.  As a Bay Area cat who doesn’t bump Hiero nearly as much as I used to, I must say this is their best work in years—maybe their most complete group effort since the seminal ‘93 Til Infinity. Longtime Hiero producer Domino added some beats and Del makes an appearance too.  Good to see these guys still going strong.

Here’s a pre-Thanksgiving joint from SOM produced by Prince Paul off Montezuma’s Revenge.

Happy holidays from Hiero!
