Pretty Lights x Run DMC :: “It’s Tricky” (Remix) (Video)

When the book is written about the takeover of electronic music in America in the early ’10s, a chapter will need to be written about the Colorado scene, which served as something of an incubator for the gradual crossing over of once hippified suburban standards (hemp necklaces, Birkenstocks, Phish) into the realm candy necklaces, glowsticks and dubstep beats. CO-based producer Pretty Lights is without a doubt at the vanguard of this procession, and his cache has shot through the roof, selling out amphitheaters across the country with his brand of spacey sounds and punishing beats. And as this clip for his remix of Run DMC’s classic “It’s Tricky” proves, he knows right where the sweet spot lies between groovy sound, punishing drops, and serious LED overload.

DJ Premier ft. Nas and The Berklee Symphony Orchestra :: “Regeneration” (Video & MP3)

While the rest of the web seems obsessed with the as-yet-unheard and surely unholy collaboration between Skrillex and the remaining members of The Doors from the new film Regeneration, another star of the film, DJ Premier, let’s us hear what happens when a beloved producer works with an uncommon musical partner.

Premier got to go into the studio with the esteemed Berklee Symphony Orchestra, and he brought along Nas for the session. The resulting tune, “Regeneration,” features the two hip-hop icon’s legendary styles, backed up by the force of a full orchestra, creating something more powerful than your average sample jockey can squeeze out of his MPC.

Kanye, Arcade Fire, Steve Wonder :: 22 Bands We Loved At Austin City Limits

Austin, Texas survived her 10th year of the Austin City Limits festival. Thousands of Austinites and tourists flooded into Zilker Park last weekend for food, drink and, most of all, the sweet sound of music. C3 productions, the producers of this three-day event, thankfully worked out some of the kinks that plagued the festival in years past. In collaboration with Austin Parks and Recreation, C3 contributed to an irrigation system for Zilker, eliminating the “Dust Bowl” phenomenon two years ago. Adequate water filling stations, misters and an ingenious recycling system (fill a bag, get a free T-shirt) all contributed to pleasant and uplifting experience much needed by the folks in Central Texas recently ravaged by wildfires.

Lollapalooza 2011 – The Final Report (Review & Gallery)

Not going to go in our reporting took a bit longer than the rest (servers down!). But here’s one last look.

Lollapalooza 2011 Review

Twenty years ago, adding the suffix “-palooza” to anything was unheard of. Today, it’s become a common term for anything explosive, peculiarly large or dynamic (examples: couchapalooza – amazing discounts at a local furniture store, or pptpalooza.net a website with loads of power point templates).  In true form, this year’s Lolla crowd was the largest ever (90,000 per day) to flood into the gates of Grant Park.

Like most 20th birthdays, Lollapalooza 2011 was memorable and interesting, but seemed a bit anticipatory. The hot spot of all three days was Perry’s tent which from noon til dark buzzed with bodies dancing almost ceaselessly in the massive 40,000 square foot enclosure. Hot, muddy, pulsating. Lolla …
