Blitzen Trapper – Destroyer of the Void (Review)

Blitzen Trapper

Destroyer of the Void

Released by Sub Pop Records

Blitzen Trapper are back with their 5. album Destroyer of the Void, following their highly acclaimed 2008 album Furr. This will be the year where they can enjoy the fruits of their own labor, after 10 years of releasing records. The album is chock-full of American music influences; from the ‘60s folk to the country and prog sounds of the ’70s, to the pop balladry of the ’80s. Nice Nice – Extra Wow (Review)

Nice Nice

Extra Wow

Released by Warp Records

Portland duo Nice Nice have been a making music for more than a decade. Their first full-length, Chrome, was released in 2003, as well as a handful of other EPs, but it’s Extra Wow that most accurately displays their very real and impressive capabilities as a band. Junk Culture – West Coast (Review)

Junk Culture

West Coast

Released by Illegal Art

The Illegal Art imprint has always celebrated judicious use of the sample, so Junk Culture’s soundscrap beats fit in that regard. But while labelmate Girl Talk flaunts well known sources in uncomfortably terrific contexts, this project from Portland resident Deepak Mantena resurrects bits of noise captured on a hand recorder for a glitchier and less straight ahead take on things. A lighting paced nine songs in 19 minutes, Mantena’s first offering is a blast to the headphones that brings to mind the off-kilter breaks of Flying ...
